"do you think.. it's someone coming to get us?" will asks, trying to get the other boy's attention. frederick immediately left the room they were in a second after he announced that there was a possibility someone else was in the vale of shadows. though his attempt was futile as frederick brushed him off.

"will— i think," frederick turns around to will once he stood right in front of the front door. "i think it's better if you stay here."

"what? no." will immediately shakes his head.

he didn't understand why frederick would even bring that suggestion up. for one, being alone was the last thing he wanted to be. he had felt the effect of not having frederick close to him earlier, of not having the warmth the boy provided, it was hell — least to say.

and it wasn't like he had things he could defend himself with. sure, he knew how to use a gun. but it's not like he had one randomly lying around in the house — there was a reason why the firearms were placed in the shed behind his house and not in the house itself. it was dangerous, and joyce didn't like the fact that her youngest son knew how to load up a gun.

he didn't want to be alone. he hated feeling alone, especially in this world.

"but it's for your safety—"

"how are you so sure it's safer for me to stay here?"

will scowls at the taller boy. he didn't understand the concept of people who would rather split up than deal with danger together. didn't more people mean that there'd be more chance of them surviving? what's the point of leaving someone behind for the sake of 'protection', if protection is something only the other person could offer?

"see, you're not sure!" will states. "it's safer if i stay with you."

frederick mirrors the shorter boy's scowl. he did have a point, he supposed. it's not like will had powers — and having will near him would be the best option so he could make sure that the boy stays alive and uninjured.

"you are irritating. do you know that, byers?"

"you're the irritating one."

the wanderer sighs in defeat whilst will smiles in satisfaction. frederick shakes his head and turns around, already knowing where they needed to go.
