"byers' body was found in the water of the quarry by the police earlier this evening. the police are atill trying to determine byers' cause of death—"

the news played in the background as ted wheeler and karen wheeler sat on the couch right in front of the television. both of them had a troubled expression, worried for their son mike as the news went around that his friend, will byers, was found dead.

though it didn't seem like it, ted has always seen mike's troublesome friends as his own — and karen shared the same sentiment, too. they came to enjoy mike's friends company, knowing that they made mike happy, even if all they did sometimes was stay in the basement to play some tabletop role-playing game and nothing else.

"should we go down and talk to michael?" ted questions. his wife had told him that michael stormed into the house with tears running down his face a few moments earlier, and even if they wanted to comfort him — it was best to leave the boy alone.

karen fiddles her fingers anxiously. "give him time. he'll come to us when he's ready.." she trails off, upset that she couldn't do anything to make her son feel better.

the woman places her hand into ted's and the man wraps his hands around her own, both of them gripping onto each other's hands to give a sense of comfort to the other. affection was rare when it came to the two, but they'd put their own discomfort away if it meant that they'd be there for their son.

down in the basement, mike wheeler was looking through a stack of paper containing will's art. the boy had always loved to draw — he'd draw the party, he'd draw anything he thinks that looks cool, he'd draw the various d&d campaigns that the party hosts, and mike kept all of them. occasionally, the party would look back to these drawings and compliment will on how much his art has improved.

it pained mike that they'd never be whole again. that the party has lost it's one and only cleric. that he's lost one of his best friends, and he would never get another chance to speak to the boy.

"can you please stop that?" mike asks, annoyed. he stares at the girl who sat in the fort he made her, her hands tinkering around with his walkie talkie.

eleven ignores the boy and continues on tuning the device in her hands, determined to channel both frederick and will so that mike could stop moping around for someone who she knew was alive. she could feel it — that she was close. there was a thread in her mind, and all she needed to do was pull that thread.

"are you deaf?" mike closes the file containing will's drawings in irritation "i thought we were friends, you know. friends tell each other the truth. and they definitely don't lie to each other."
