Part 14

Love.

The next dawn , the boys were together again , ensconced in their warm nook , hidden away from view and protected from the sharpening wind by the tall, thick grass . They had just finished revising . Now they sat munching some biscuits and bananas Duke had filched from home .

He had woken up before dawn and inexpertly made tea . This was a task never before undertaken by him . The kitchen was a domain where he stepped through only to harass the cooks for snacks .

He'd filled up his school thermos with the tea , picked up a tin of biscuits and silently crept out through the back gate . He went past the temple and ran down the steep path to the river side . The field of catkins were swaying in the cold dawn wind as if beckoning him home . He ran through and reached the nook in the middle to see that Piku was already there .

Piku had smiled at him broadly , his eyes luminous with unshed tears .

He was determined to hide the storm of doubts and fears the conversation with his sister had raised in his mind . He had slept fitfully and finally given up at 4 am. He'd been waiting here for Duke since 4 in the morning, in pitch dark .

Their makeshift breakfast completed , Piku lay down on Duke's lap as he'd done numerous times before . He was feeling sleepy but didn't want to sleep . He remembered a different day when he'd lain with his head on Duke's lap .

Slowly the memory of that afternoon released the tightness in his chest . He looked up at Duke and got a jolt . Duke was looking down at him , smiling , no doubt , remembering the same thing.

Another day came to his mind and Piku sat up .

He asked Duke , ' When did you realize that you felt this way ? You said you fell in love with me during our camping trip . How come I have no idea ? '

Duke stretched out against the pillows and got more comfortable . He gave Piku an odd little smile . He said , ' do you remember what you did on the final day ? '

Piku nodded like a sage and said , ' Yep . I swam in the river and almost drowned in the undercurrent but you saved me .'

Duke snorted and said , ' No , you cretin , I didn't save you !! I jumped in after you but couldn't do much ,  the currents were dragging me down too . We could've both died that day . The fishermen saved us . They dived in and pulled us out of the water .'

He shook his head and said , ' oh my god ! You'd swallowed so much water ! I'll never forget the sight of water pouring out of your nose and mouth !'

Piku gave a loud bark of laughter. 'So that's when you fell for me ? Water pouring out of my nose was so sexy that you had to have me ?'

' Noo , you idiot ! Will you let me finish ? '

'Hmm , ok , ok , bolo !'  said Piku still smiling at the mental image of himself vomiting water . He decided to sketch the scene . He stretched out next to Duke and listened .

Duke said , ' so , that night Ashutosh sir gave you a sleeping drought to help you sleep . Did you know that ? You slept like the dead and I ..... ' Duke stopped and looked away , suddenly realizing what he was about to say .
