Chapter 4 Medix Vs Epilepsy

Medix Redden had woken up feeling fine and was heading off to school. He was so excited today he was going to present a big project which he hoped he was going to pass.

Once in the class room he was talking to his friends and eager to tell them many things. "I am looking forward to this project I hope it goes well," Medix said.

"I hope it does," Wedge said. "I worked really hard on my diorama about Volcanos." he said.

"I worked hard on mine, it is about the savannah," Hot shot said.

"I worked hard on mine it is about birds," Whirl said.

"I hope mine does well it's about fossils," Hoist said.

"I made mine about bats," Medix said.

Then class started. "Okay class let's present our projects," Ms. Leif said. "Who would like to go first?" Ms. Leif asked.

"I would," Medix said.

"Okay Medix," Ms. Leif said.

Medix went up front with his diagram. "This diorama is about bats," Medix said. "Now bats are the only mammals that can fly and the saying blind as a bat isn't true because there has never been any record of blind bats," Medix said then suddenly Medix fell backwards to the floor and started shaking.

Everyone in the class panicked. "He's having seizure," Ms. Leif said.

Hot shot ran too the office with Whirl. "Yes may I help you kids?" the lady said.

"Our friend Medix Redden he's having a seizure," Hot shot said.

"Not good," the lady said. "Nurse Taylor your are needed in Ms. Leif's room a student is having a seizure," she said.

"On my way." she said then ran to the classroom.

Then 911 was called and the ambulance came. They checked on Medix who was starting to sit up. "Uh what happened?" Medix asked.

"You had seizure kid," the EMT said.

"I never had a seizure before," Medix said.

"We better take you to the hospital to play it safe," the EMT said.

Medix was taken to Children's Mercy South Hospital.

Ratchet saw Medix being brought in. "Medix what happened?" Ratchet asked.

"Well Uncle Ratchet during my presentation I had a seizure that has never happened to me before," Medix said.

"Well we will keep an eye on this and hopefully it was a one time thing," Ratchet said.

Then a week later at home Medix had another seizure. "Okay Medix I think it is best to get this checked out," his uncle told him.

Once at hospital the ran lots of tests they did an EEG where they stuck a lot of stickers and wires on Medix's head. Then they did an MRI. After it was all said and done it was time to hear the results.

"Alright we have the results from the tests, and Medix has epilepsy." the doctor said. "So you will have more seizures throughout your life," he said.

"That doesn't sound good," Medix said.

"True but Epilepsy can be managed, and you can live a long happy normal life, we just have to find out what medicines work best for you, and if you may need extra help with it." the doctor said.

"Like what?" Medix asked.

"Like a seizure service dog to warn you about on coming seizures and to get you help if you need it during a seizure, the dog if it is big enough can help cushion your fall during seizure." the doctor said.

"Sounds good to me I am I so over hitting my head hard when I fell to the ground both times, the floors at home and at school are hard." Medix said.

"Well just remember a few safety rules for just in case at anytime a seizure might happen. Make sure you are in a clear wide area, so you don't hit anything sharp, or anything that is too hard other than the ground. Don't take a bath alone or swim alone just in case you might have seizure while in the water. Don't ride a bike alone either just in case you have seizure while riding it. Wear alert medical ids to let others know about your epilepsy and who to call if you need help during seizure." the doctor said. "Also let all your friends know about your condition," he said.

"Okay," Medix said.

"Now you friends might act a little weird at first and all the adults in your life might get over protective for a while. But it is just because the love you and care about you," The doctor said.

"Will I know when I am going to have seizure?" Medix asked.

"Unfortunately for many it is impossible for them to tell when they are going to have seizure, now I am prescribing this medication for you to try. This medicine is suppose to help prevent your seizures take it twice a day at the same time each day. If this one doesn't work for you come back and we will keep trying different ones until we find the one that works for you, if we find one that works and it helps with stopping so many seizures then that is good. But some people their seizures aren't controlled well by medicine and they need more help so they can stay safe and healthy. So we will keep a close eye on things to make sure yours is managed." the doctor said.

So things were not such a big deal. It took a while and it took some getting used too. Medix had to explain to his friends and teachers that he may get seizures but he should be treated like he was made of glass.

The nurse even came into class to explain to them what to do if Medix does have seizure and how to help him and what to do if it becomes an emergency. His friends understood and were there for him.

Medix knew with his friends help he can manage and live with his epilepsy.
