I wasn’t aware of when the sun went down and night came. Neither was I aware of when the room fell dark. The moon's light shone down on the pages. It took the watering of my eyes to snap me out of the trance of reading. I stood and stretched with a yawn. My body felt so tired but I had to know more.
I walked towards his bed and laid down. I skipped the page. A few more chapters to go but I soon fell asleep.I wasn’t aware when he came in the room and lifted me by the bed. Nor when he carried me to my room. I felt when he laid my down on my bed and covered me with my sheet. I wanted to say something even though I don’t know what to say.
But he left, locking the door behind him. He came as silently as he left and I fell into a deep slumber.
*****
The knocking of my door woke me up the next morning. He was there with a smile on his face. I looked him over. He was dressed and had a bag on his shoulder. “Where are you going?”
I rubbed the sleep from my eyes. I wonder what time it was. “I’m going out for the day. Mom will be home. You can come down for breakfast whenever you’re ready.” He had that look on his face again. He wanted to say something else. Just let it out already! I wish I could say that but it would be wrong. I only hope the look on my face said enough.
He turned away and started walking. I turned away and was closing the door when he stopped. “You can stay in my room while I’m away. I saw that you were reading a book. I’ll get more on my way back for you if you want.”
Oh. That was unexpected. “Yes. I’d like that.” He made his way down the stairs and out of sight. I guess it’s time for me to get dressed as well.
*****
After getting dressed, I tidied my room. Hah, my room. This wasn’t my room. There were no school books on the table, uniform in the closet or teddy bears on the bed. So no, this wasn’t my room but only a room I was allowed to stay in. I had to remember that none of this is mine.
I had to get back what was mine. I had to get back to it but now I had to get something in my stomach. I had no dinner yesterday.
I made my way downstairs to see Miss. Diona in the kitchen. I wasn’t accustomed to this either. We didn’t have to cook back home. Mom and dad were too busy for that.A chef would have prepared everything and laid it out for us to eat. It felt kinda nice seeing a mother in the kitchen.
She gave me a smile and told me to take a seat. There was something comforting about her. Unlike mom who was strict she was calm.
I liked her.“Nicholas told me what you ordered for breakfast so I decided to make something similar. Enjoy.” She placed the plate in front of me and headed for the kitchen. My eyes followed her. She hummed a tune as she cleaned the mess from yesterday and trust me it was messy. It looked like animals had been here.
But she didn’t mind. She just did what she had to do. Mom would have gone crazy if she saw this. If one thing is out of place then the whole house is a mess. She would curse anyone and anything and wouldn’t stop until the ‘mess’ was gone. There is such a big difference with being here and back home. But I don’t have much of a problem being here. It’s nice.
I finished eating and continued watching her. Sitting and doing nothing was frowned upon at home. You had to continuously show your worth or else why would you be needed. It was a hassle really. It was all a hassle. But seeing her actually working and feeling happy, made me want to do something to. That’s it. I stood up and carried the rest of the dishes to the kitchen. I washed them and made my way beside her.
She gave me a smile and continued. So I helped her with the clean up. It didn’t feel like a chore, or a nuisance. It felt good doing something just for the heck of it. She told me jokes and we had fun with the cleaning. It was nothing like home. It wasn’t a hassle. I felt…..happy showing my worth without having worry about a punishment if I fail.
She looked at the time and took up a tray off the counter. “It’s time for him to wake up.” She headed for stairs and motioned for me to follow.
“He was so tired from the meeting yesterday. I had to let him sleep in a bit later. Can you open the door for me please?” We stopped at a room. I opened the door and in the bed was Mr. Thompson. He was a muscly guy. He had an air of seriousness even in his sleep, but the drool running from his lips made him seem soft. He was like a cuddly bear that you knew better than to tease.
She placed the tray on the counter and opened the curtains. The sun shined into the room and onto the bed. He tossed and turned. She headed towards the bed and gently shook him awake.
He eventually opened his eyes and pulled her on top of him. He gave me a wave and that was when I left. I was not gonna stay around to see what happened next.
I made my way to Declan’s room. The bed had not been spread and he had clothes thrown on the ground. Something needs to change here. I made my around the room, picking up the clothes from the floor. I placed them on the bed and opened the window.
There was no sign of the younger set from yesterday. Adults made their way through the village in a haste. It seems today was busy for everyone. I turned around and looked around the room. It’s time to get cleaning.
*****
After some cleaning i laid on the bed. I hope to find something that could be useful to me but there was nothing. The only thing out of the ordinary in the room was fur and tear on the clothes. That could easily be explained with wolf.
I wonder if they’re more of wolf around. Does he have a family? Is wolf the only one that comes to this village. If it was another wolf I had met, would I have survived?
I rolled onto my side. What a stupid question was that. Not all wolves are kind, they are wild carnivorous beast. Being alive until now is a miracle.
That was when i noticed the book from yesterday. I could finish it until I was given something to do. I walked towards the table and pick it up. That was when I felt eyes on me. I looked out the window but saw nothing.
It might just be my anxiety getting to me again. I laid on the bed and got to reading.
