My dearest Annie,
I know if you're reading this I have pissed off the grim reaper one too many times. You're probably sitting in your new home, all alone, reading this letter wondering why the hell I sent you to Hawkins. But let me tell you a story before things get too crazy. Your mom has a sister, as you probably already know. Claudia never could mind her own damn business. Growing up Claudia and Mary were inseparable. When one would style their hair a certain way, you were sure to find the other copying the same style. But as they grew up they grew apart. Mary never fit in with the same crowd that Claudia surrounded herself with. People would call her a freak, until eventually she believed them. Mary eventually fell in love with a freak of her own and they had you, which enraged Claudia. No one knows what was said between the those two but whatever it was, sent my sweet Mary far away from home. Of course I stayed in Hawkins at first, until I realized the town was cursed without Mary. I know things in Hawkins can seem a little upside down, but you were never a right side up kind of girl. Don't lose sight of what's important to you, sweet Annie.Love,
Mamaw Pearl
