The next day at school, the boys were all excited and already talking about packing their bags. Word was getting around, and there was already a farewell party being planned.

"Heard you going to America." Paul turned and saw Mr. Stephen looking at him. "I'm going to miss you next year."

"Yeah, me too, you come to the party if you want!'

The teacher smiled softly, "Much too busy, I'm afraid."

June came rather quickly, and so did graduation. The party was at a friend's house, and everyone popular was there. Ringo was dancing, George was getting all the attention of the girls, and John was dancing with Cynthia. It was agreed upon that she would go to America four months after the baby's birth. It would suck not having each other, but they thought it was better to wait.

Paul was outside, smoking and taking it all in. Only seven months ago, he was a depressed, lonely, and timid sixteen-year-old. Now he's a popular, charming, and happy seventeen-year-old. With a little help from his friends, he was so much different. He was truly a man.

"Paul, we need to talk."

He turned around and saw Jane beginning to walk toward him. He flung his cigarette and hugged her, but she didn't hug back.

She looked down as he moved back. "I know you're going to America tomorrow.."

"Yeah, I'm really excited!" Then it clicked, "But don't worry, we can still have a relationship!"

"I don't know..."

"We can write and call. I really really like you!"

Wow, that's the first time I said that!

"I like you too..." Jane looked up at him like a sad puppy. "But I don't think it's going to work out."

Paul's heart cracked. "No, it can!"

"It can't! I don't want an overseas relationship, I want a real relationship. It's just not going to work."

They both stood there, face down. A man can't have everything, but it hurts the most when he can't have love.

"I understand." He looked at her. "I'm not angry, but I'll never forget you. You were so nice to hang out with, and I was hoping to get closer, but it's ok. I get it."

She opened her arms. "I'm sorry."

He hugged her. "Don't be, I understand."

They hugged each other, both feeling numb and disappointed at the same time. They could've been great.

She kissed him on his lips. Paul wanted this for so long, but now he didn't. He pushed her away and smiled softly at her. "No thanks."

"Alright."

She looked at him, her long red hair blowing in the breeze. She walked inside a car, sat in the passenger seat, and was gone after that.

Paul watched the car go until it was out of sight.

This is the way it should be.

He sat on the step, smoking two whole packs as the music from inside made the house shake. Tomorrow was a new, important day.
