I sigh heavily, staring up at the ceiling. I can't get yesterday out of my mind. Vandor has been selling out people from the undercity, so the enforcers won't harass us as often. It's working but I'm still conflicted. Rightfully so, I suppose.
I recall the last war with topside. Vander said he didn't know who initiated it. I'm starting to doubt that. But why would he lie? My father figure and his brother had died. Yeah, it's fine. He doesn't have the heart to betray us like that. He's just looking out for us.
I smile at the thought of him being so protective. I then glance around the room at his various adoptive children. Vi is in an intense fight with the punching bag machine. Racking up points as she goes. "Remind me why we bother with this dump." Mylo asks from the other side of the arcade. "Vander said to lay low, enforcers never come down here. So, this is as good a place as any." She wipes sweat from her face.
"Oh, what's the matter Mylo? You worried powder's gonna beat you again?" Claggor teases the boy. "Hey! If she didn't keep fixing these things, I wouldn't keep missing!" He shouts back. Just then the short girl pops up and scares him. Holding two huge wires, she pushes them together, and the shooting game lights up behind her in bright neon colors. She slides over the counter while Mylo makes a face at her.
"You guys know I wouldn't take you on a job you couldn't handle right?" Vi asks nervously while wrapping her hands. "Are you kiddin! That was the best job we've ever done!" He says enthusiastically. I get up and walk over to watch as I see Powder loading pink paint bullets into the gun. "Maybe just, don't take Powder next time" he suggests.
"Uhm..." Claggor doesn't speak, not wanting to be mean. I place a firm hand on Mylo's shoulder, not saying anything. Powder glares at him and finishes loading the paint pistol. She aims with a serious face before shooting. With quick shots, she hits every target with a clink and a spin. Going off on the last one. She spins to look at Mylo who stands, jaw dropped. I removed my grip from the shocked boy and pat him on the back, nodding to Powder that we should go elsewhere.
The girl breaks her glare and walks away with me. Shouting can be heard from where we stand, so I motion for her to be quiet. We peak through holes in the stained glass. There are enforcers roughing up people. They're in full armor and one has a rowdy woman in his grip. "Get back" he sighs and throws her by the arm. Earning a yelp from her as she hits the ground
Once he marches out of the way, more are in sight. Surrounding a man who is being held in place.
"Tell me where I can find them." The main enforcer orders. "Topsider business ain't my concern" the man tells him pointedly. He gets yanked back by his clothes. "It's every one of you trenchers concern now" he says threateningly. My eyes widen. Is that the Marcus guy from last night? "Give me a name" he orders. The man yanks out of the enforces grip and steps forward, opening his mouth like he's gonna say something. Powders hand latches onto mine as we watch in suspense. The man then spits out a glob of saliva and mucus on the enforcers shoe.
Powder backs up but tugs me with her because we are holding hands. "Hey guys" she calls out to them "I think you should see thi-" GLASS SHATTERS and shoots everywhere, almost like it's in slow motion. I quickly yank the young girl into me and turn so she doesn't get hit with the glass. I glance at the mans unconscious body that hit the wall. Before we all look at the enforcers. The leader locks eyes with me and his face flashes recognition. Yup, it's Marcus. He glares at me and I hold Powder tightly, her back to me. "Search them" he orders.
The other enforcers obey and walk in through the broken window. "Go ahead idiots! We've got nothing!" Mylo taunts and raised his hands in the air. Powder glances to Vi and clutches her bag closed. Vi's eyes widen and I look down at Powder. Of course, she told her sister. An enforcer stops right Infront of us, and his helmet seems to look straight at me. I move Powder behind me, against the counter. I step forward and nod to Vi who then turns to Claggor. The chubby boy pulls a switch and the whole room lights up in blacklights, a skull on the floor in purple.
