What a time to be alive. At least, that's what people might think when they take a look at my life so far. In reality, that's not what it feels like. I hate my job. I hate my life. I could be doing so much more, but... this is what I'm stuck with. A boring job at a bakery that practically pays me in pennies. And yet, I've never found a good reason to abandon this life of mine. I have no connection to my family, so I can't rely on them to get me out of this endless cycle of monotonous baking. I'm not even that good at it. Despite what everyone says, my skills as a baker are just barely adequate.

My self-deprecating narration was rudely interrupted by the sound of the bell on the front door, indicating the arrival of a new customer. I put my Customer Service Smile™️ on and greeted the patron as per usual.

"Hello! Welcome to the Breadlight Bakery, how can I serve you today-?"

My whole spiel was postponed when I noticed who I was speaking to.

"The usual, if you wouldn't mind."

Dark, long brown hair and glowing green eyes took up my attention as a smile managed to break away the stiff features that occupied my face. It was Jacob, my childhood best friend. We've been sticking together for as long as I can remember, especially after I was kicked out of my family's house. She's someone I can always fall back onto when I'm feeling utterly drained and done with life. I turned to the pastry display and used some nearby tongs to fish out her favorite baked goods. As I started to place the baked goods into a paper bag, I looked over at Jacob and spoke in the most unenthusiastic tone I could manage,

"So, how's life treating you?"

"Certainly better than it's treating you, Y/N. I'm sorry that you didn't get into the college that you were hoping for. That sucks."

She was sympathetic, and I appreciated it, but I couldn't really care less about not getting into the college she was talking about. Besides, I didn't have the money to get in either way.

"Eh, it is what it is. At the very least, I got a job that pays... money," Jacob shrugged and took the bag of baked goods I had rung up at the counter.

"I hope you have a better rest of your day. I'll see you later," Jacob turned to walk out of the bakery.

Before she reached the door, I playfully remarked,
"Yeah, see you later LOSER," I couldn't help but grin as Jacob flipped me the bird on the way out. Maybe today will get a bit better.

~

There were fifteen minutes before my shift was over. I stared at the clock. This day had been longer than I had originally thought it would've been. But after those fifteen minutes, I could finally retreat into the comforts of my own home and play my favorite game. As I began to close up shop, putting away the baked goods that weren't stale, shutting off the lights, etc etc, something felt... off. I looked around, cautious to my surroundings as I grabbed a spatula for 'self-defense'. Like a spatula was going to do anything.

I crept around the bakery towards the front door, my backpack in hand, and spatula in the other. It was really foggy outside. I noticed when I stared out the window that there was a silhouette out within that very fog. I thought to myself that it was either ride or die. I was going to get home.

I sprinted out. Running towards the silhouette at full speed before getting prepared to bring down whatever or whoever this silhouette belonged to.

CLANG!

As soon as I smacked the shadow with the spatula, I heard a very surprised and confused "Ow!" emit from it. I soon recognized who that voice belonged to.
"What was that for?!"

"Oh my god, I'm so sorry-"

Jacob was here to pick me up. I had completely forgotten. She shot me a playful glare as she held her forehead.

"Were you scared or something? Your games getting you all jumpy lately?"

I let out an annoyed, yet relieved sigh.

"No, Jacob. My games don't induce genuine fear and panic into my brain, unlike what you do. Rock climbing is way scarier."

"Sure, yeah, yeah," Jacob rolled her eyes. "Let's just go, it's really cold out here."

I nodded in response and walked with her towards her car. I took one last glance back at the bakery.

"I could've sworn I saw something in there..."

"It must've been the wind~!" She mockingly joked as she unlocked her car. I climbed into the passenger seat and lightly punched Jacob in the shoulder.

"Shut up, dude."

Jacob laughed.

~

When we got to my place, I gathered all of my stuff and waved Jacob goodbye before finally being able to unlock my door and step into my safe space. I quickly shut the door behind me and rushed to get the instant ramen cooking as my computer began warming up. Once the ramen was done, I added the flavoring packet and rushed it back over to my computer before throwing my headset on and logging into the game. I'd been waiting for this all day, so I was pretty excited to get back into it.

The title Dead By Daylight arrived in front of my eyes as I slurped from the ramen bowl carefully so as to not stain my clothes or the mousepad. I played for hours, enough to make it feel like I was about to completely crash on my desk. In which I probably was. Eventually, I was too sleepy to keep playing and fell asleep on my keyboard. The fog on the menu screen seemed so much closer than it was before.

~

When I woke up, I was definitely not at my desk. It was familiar though. The overwhelming amount of fog, the thick forest of trees, the campfire with four people sitting around it...

Then it clicked.

Holy shit.
