warning: there is like a small brief moment where Remus dead names the reader because he isn't aware of the transition. Remus also says trans rights through okay.
There are some things in life you don't see coming, even from a mile away. One of those things for you is a second invite to join the Order.
Back during the first war against Voldemort, you and your friends had been a strong part of the Order. Now, it felt strange to be getting an invite, knowing that the majority of them would not be returning as well. The only one, you suspected, would be Remus Lupin. The two of you hadn't kept in contact, but you'd always known he was out there. 'Protecting the world' from himself probably, hidden away so they'd never know the truth about the beast he shared his body with.
Sirius Black was on the run from the ministry, he had broken out of prison years prior and nobody had heard a word from him since. It was all over the papers how he broke into Hogwarts. And of course, James and Lily Potter were long dead.
It was funny how a group of people you had once felt like you couldn't live without had been gone from your life for over a decade now. Time really was weird that way wasn't it? Your heart ached for the days spent by the lake, dozing in the afternoon sun or on the Quidditch pitch, cheering James and Sirius on from the stands.
"Are you going to join or what?" The paper in your hands seemed to scream.
12 Grimmauld Place. The address sounded familiar and yet you couldn't recall why at the moment. Maybe it had been a headquarters for the Order in the past. Gathering your things, you took one last longing long at the life you'd built up over the past decade. There was a good chance you wouldn't be returning to it, even if you survived. Then, you shut the door, taking a deep breath and mounting your broom. 'We can't trust the Ministry. Only forms of transport the Ministry can't track', the note had said.
At least you'd be seeing Remus again.
Landing in front of 12 Grimmauld Place, you remembered now why the address had seemed so familiar. This was Sirius Black's family home. You'd only ever visited it once, the summer after you'd all graduated Hogwarts. He'd wanted to pick up some things he'd left behind when he'd moved in with James a few years back, you'd gone with for moral support but you couldn't make it past the doorway. His family started a screaming match with him as soon Sirius entered the home and you hadn't wanted to get involved.
Still, watching it pop out from between the homes on either side was as magical now as it had been then.
"What do Muggles not have houses like this?" Sirius' teasing voice echoed in your mind as you climbed up the porch and cautiously knocked on the door. There was no answer and after a moment of hesitation, you opened the door yourself. They had invited you here, if they didn't want you to come right in they shouldn't have.
Even though you'd only ever seen the entrance to 12 Grimmauld Place way back then, you could tell the home was different. It was empty, at least out here. The Black's had all perished in the first war, leaving the home to be inherited by Sirius, the last remaining son. But he'd been in Azkaban the last decade so nobody had really been keeping the house in that time. It was oddly the perfect place to hide. The Death Eaters wouldn't even think they'd all be hiding out in the home of one of their own.
You wondered if this was Dumbledore's idea.
There was quiet chatter somewhere in the house, but you were unable to propel yourself toward it. It'd been such a long time since you'd seen anyone besides the occasional visit from Dumbledore himself. Solitude from the Wizarding World wasn't a choice you'd made purposely, but life had suited you and at least in the muggle world you didn't have to worry about all your friends leaving you with the flick of a wand.
