John spent three days trying not to think about Ambrose. He didn't need that guy. He didn't want that guy. He didn't.

He had a gig scheduled that he was worried about doing with his back the way it was, but it ended up being fine. The rich woman just wanted him to stand behind her and look scary while she served her husband divorce papers. It was an easy job and he gave her a big discount so she could pay for better lawyers.

Now he and Penny were out shopping. She already got all her textbooks and stuff for her new semester, and she wanted a few new items of clothing to pad her closet. They spent three hours digging through thrift stores. John could pay for pretty much any clothes she wanted, but old habits die hard and both of them were too used to bargain hunting.

At the mall they had mixed luck. The clothes were trendy, but none of them were made well. Fast fashion; the downfall of well-made clothes.

"And then I saw the history professor and I was like, OMG," Penny said around a mouthful of fries. "She's smoking hot. I'm planning on spending plenty of time in her class to learn."

John rolled his eyes. The food court of the mall was loud and smelled like greasy comfort food, but he kinda liked it. A milkshake sat between them on the table and Penny ate her way through a fast food meal. John allowed himself a french fry, but he needed to be careful what he ate since he couldn't exercise like he usually did until his back was healed.

"Okay," John said. "Sure you will. But you'd better not make any moves until after the class is over."

"I would never!"

"Mm-hm."

"I mean I might invite her to my birthday party..."

"Your birthday was last month."

"Yeah," Penny rolled her eyes. "But I could have a belated party. And if there happens to be a pole at the party and I happen to show off my sexy moves, and then she happens to fall madly in lust with me then what can I do about that? It would be totally accidental."

"Ten bucks she says no to going to your birthday party."

"Ugh, you're so mean."

John got an itching between his shoulder blades. He stiffened and spun his head around to Look.

Knife. Blood. Angry man.

"Come on!" John grabbed Penny and pulled her to her feet. She yelped and snagged her bags before he could pull her away from the table.

"What's wrong? What did you see?" she asked nervously, correctly interpreting his sudden urgency. It helped that his three best friends knew about his skill. That made things easier.

John Looked around the food court and cursed.

"I've got some men here trying to shank me to death, it seems."

"What?"

"Shh," John pulled her through the crowd. He yanked her to the left for no apparent reason and they ran out of the food court and into a JC Penny's. It was a big store, and John knew they could get lost and find plenty of exits- scratch that, the exits wouldn't work out. He kept his second sight on, not willing to risk Penny's life. He adjusted his grip from her arm to her hand and she clutched his fingers tightly. They ran through the perfume section, John ducked with her behind some mannequins for a few seconds, and then they went back the way they came. At the entrance to the rest of the mall John cussed again and started running. Penny was breathing hard but she kept up. They ducked into a shoe store right as three men wearing dark casual clothes and baseball caps came running back out of JC Penny's. They looked around the mall and conferred for a minute. One of them pulled out a phone.
