Forsaken Tower: Chapter 4 - To a New Start

Flashback

Alec Seawynd hung back with his crowd of eccentric nerds in the Seaway Junior High Cafeteria. They were all eating lunch together, some kelp mush-looking thing that ungracefully splatted on their plates. The room suddenly went silent and Alec felt an elbow to his stomach, his best friend Mint Seagem was giving him a weird look. Alec groaned, the mixture of the two could only mean one thing, that his eternal rival Silvyr Sealight had arrived.

He turned his head around with a frown to see Silvyr float in wearing an elegant silver flowing robe with a halter neck. His broad and muscly shoulders were exposed along with half of his back, sending the girls giggling. His hands were full of silvery white rings and he wore a pair of dangling crystal earrings that matched a crystal circlet with a crystal droplet hanging down to his forehead. Alec scowled, beautiful, he thought, but he wasn't about to say that. The words that came out instead were: "Tasteless in fashion as always, that designer went out of fashion ten thousand years ago."

Silvyr was one of the 'handsome and dashing popular kids', in a stereotyped manner, not that Alec wasn't popular. Their rivalry made them equally popular, but it's more a statement about the company they keep. Alec preferred the quiet nerdish group he found as friends whilst Silvyr's group was the loud and constantly partying type, not that there was anything wrong with either group, but it became another point of argument between the two.

Mint stifled a laugh as she struggled to keep her food down. "Well I think they just came back in fashion," she said.

"I agree," Silvyr had come up next to Alec by now, "it's certainly more unique than your perfectly tailored tuxedo and an oversized brooch."

"Unique does not equate to taste," Alec argued back. "If you aimed to look like a Druid then you've succeeded, but a Sea God with impeccable taste? That you have failed."

"I beg to differ," Silvyr raised an eyebrow. "Old trends have been known to make a comeback and the present trends have proved to be boring."

"Do you intend on fighting me in that?" Alec challenged. "You can barely walk without tripping on the hem, pretty boy, clearly that outfit isn't going to do you any favours this afternoon." The two of them had daily duels in the school's arena, it's attracted a fair amount of attention as the overall score between them is tied, more or less.

"I can walk just fine thank you very much," Silvyr scoffed, "and whilst I may be pretty, please don't fall for me because I would hate to break your heart." The students around them reacted loudly to that, some making kissing noises and others making inappropriate comments.

"Me? Fall for you?" Alec looked at him in disbelief, "I'm not the one digging up ancient fashion trends to impress someone, so that statement would be more appropriate addressed for you."

"I'm not dressing to impress someone," Silvyr retorted, "I'm dressing to impress everyone." He swept his bare arms out, gesturing to the other students who had gathered to watch the spectacle. "And to outdo you," he added with a charming chuckle.

"Come on, just call a vote already," Sabre Sealantern, who is usually glued to Silvyr's side groaned. "Mint, back me up on this."

Mint laughed carelessly with a neat shrug. "They do this every day, what's new?"

Alec and Silvyr both turned to address the crowds. "You know the deal," Silvyr began with an air of confidence.

"Loudest cheer announces the winner," Alec finished as he smirked over at Silvyr. Their 'fans' were already excited, making loads of noise and waving around banners of their names. It's more of a tradition nowadays than competition because they've done it so much and with just about everything. It just so happens that this week, the choice of competition was fashion sense.
