Blue mood

I woke abruptly to the sunlight hitting my face through a gap in the blanket den. My awakening mechanical. I crawled over El trying not to wake her and slipped out the den and looked out the window. The sun climbed over the other houses revealing its full summer angry-god self. It shone into the window, a long, blaring finger aimed at me through the frail floral curtains accusing: you have been seen. You will be seen.

I then hurry away from the window and headed over towards the small table and sat in one of the chairs. I'm the table there where small little people placed around on a board of paper. There was a large book on the table but it opened out and there was scrambled writing everywhere and doodles of monsters.

"That's d&d! It means dungeons and dragons...it's a game"

I jumped at the sound of mikes voice behind me.

"Sorry I didn't mean to scare you, where's El?"

"Still asleep"

But as I said that she then emerged from the den and looked at us with tired eyes.

"Oh I got you guys breakfast"

He then pulled round bread like things out of his pocket and handed them to us. I remember the look of them! Waffles! I used to have them for breakfast all the time when I was little. El devoured it and so did I since we were starving from all the running last night.

"So this sound weird but I need you guys to do something...you have to climb out there, go to the door and ring the door bell, my mom will answer and you have to say that you're lost and need help and my mom will know what to do...she'll call someone to help you but whatever you do you can't tell her about me or that you know me...got it? It's no big deal, we can just pretend that we're meeting again for the first time!"

El looked up at me with worry and looked back at Mike...

"No" her voice was slightly muffled since it was stiff full of the breakfast but she made it clear. And she was right...who know what would happen if his mom made another call.

"Yeah no, that's not going to happen Mike"

"But why? You don't want my mom to get help?"

El shook her head...

"You're both in trouble aren't you? W-who are you in trouble with"

I look at El who seems upset,

"Bad"

"Bad? Bad people? That want to hurt you guys?"

El nodded.

She then made a gun shape with her finger and pointed it at me...then herself and then Mike. His eyes widened. The silence was cut off my by his mom upstairs,

"Micheal where are you?! You're going to be late for school!"

"Okay I'll be right back just stay in the den so no one sees you!"

We then hurried back into the den as he ran upstairs.

"Hey El...are you okay? I know this is a lot but we have each other and no matter what I'll protect you!"

She looked at me with teary eyes and smiled.

"I'm happy we are friends"

"Me too"

A little while later Mike came running back down the stair the house now more quiet than before.

"Okay you guys can come with me"

He took us upstairs and began talking to El about random things. I watched them play around with this huge chair and he was making her laugh. I was glad that she was making friends already but couldn't help but wish someone my age was here that I could be friends with.

I looked around and saw photos of a girl that looked just like Mike with long brown hair and a pretty smile. I wandered where she was since me and her looked like a similar age...maybe we could be friends...

I walk round the rest of the house. It's so nice here everything is perfectly normal. It sort of reminds me of my old house. Except my house was right beside the woods and my mom loved blue so we had blue walls, blue furniture, a blue couch there was blue everywhere. Maybe it's because she was always so sad...in a blue mood.

My mom was always in a blue mood, I suppose she had every right, she had a weird kid and an angry husband. But somehow I always believed that she liked me, loved me even. But she didn't, maybe because I'm the one who made her blue in the first place...

I wondered upstairs where Mike and El where already up there in his room playing with his toys. "Oh hey Anya sorry we left you but I wanted to show El my figurines!"

"It's okay, you have a really nice house"

"Uh yeah it's nice I guess"

El walks over to a few trophy's.

"Oh yeah those are me and my friends trophy's that we won for the science fairs! We've gotten all first place except from last year when we got third but Mr Clarke said that was just political"

She looked intensely at a small picture of Mike and his friends then pointed to a boy that we'd never seen before.

"Y- you know will?! Did you see him, last night? On the road?"

We heard a screech of a car outside. "Oh no! My moms back! Hurry!" We started to run downstairs but she was already standing there closing the door. We then ran back upstairs but she heard us running.

"Ted?! Is that you?"

"Just me mom!"

"Mike?! What are you doing home!"

"Just one second!!!"

He then opened up a closet and told us to go in I ran in and El hesitantly came in beside me.

"Okay stay here I promise I won't tell my mom about you guys! Just be quiet! I won't be long"

He then closed the door and it became very dark and El started sniffling again.

"El? Are you ok?"

"I-I'm scared"

"Why?"

"It's dark..."

I then hugged her just like I did last night and she quietly sniffled into my shoulder and we waited for Mike to come back.

Papa used to do this thing where he'd lock you away in this tiny room and when he closed the door it would go pitch black. I remember whenever he would do it I'd be terrified. I can only imagine that that's the reason El is scared right now...

We waited a little longer until we could hear Mikes footsteps coming up the stairs he then swung open the closet door and saw that El was upset.

"Oh...are you ok?"

"Mhm"

"Are you sure?"

"Promise"
