Do you know what is the biggest problem on Wattpad? I mean, Wattpad has a lot of issues but if there's one thing that pisses me off the most is the lack of creativity....let me explain.
Back in 2019, male reader stories had a huge surge of books on this website. Every single category you could possibly think of had at least one male reader book and to be frank, it was kind of cool, but there were two tags...two tags that simply took over wattpad when it comes to male reader stories.
Abused and Neglected.
The number of stories with those tags was absurd, trying to find a male reader book without any of those was hard and trying to find a story with them that wasn't a male reader story was even harder.
Now back to the lack of creativity problem.
While there were a lot of abused and neglected books...most of them were exactly the same, not even some sort of twist to the overused formula, just a copy and paste of the same characters, same universe, and the same plot with the only thing that is different from each book being how the main character became extremely overpowered.
Back then most of these stories took place in the RWBY universe, where the main character would be the son of Tai and would be a punching bag to the whole family. Eventually, he would try to run away but in every book that I read the main character had to do something before running away...something totally important and necessary...can you guess what it is?
If you thought about WRITING A FUCKING LETTER then congratulations, you were right!
What the hell?! of all the things that you should be worried about and you're worried about your abusive family not knowing that you ran away?! are you kidding me?!!
Oooooh but that's just the tip of the iceberg my friend, things just get worse and worse.
After successfully escaping his prison, the main character would run to a forest INFESTED WITH GRIMM and would eventually be surrounded by the monsters. it seems to be the end of our MC but then ... actually let me give you an example of how things would go:
'"...Well....guess that it" I said to myself as a pack of beowolfs slowly approached me. I'm weak, my body still hurts from the beating yang and dad gave me and I'm surrounded, with nowhere to go I just accepted my fate.
The leader of back jumped in my direction, ready to tear me apart. I closed my eyes, hoping it wouldn't hurt.
....
I opened my eyes wondering why this thing is taking so long to kill me only to find all of them dead. I was shocked ...what just happened?
???: hey kiddo, you okay?
I looked behind me and there was the person who saved my life, I couldn't believe it...IT WAS DANTE FROM DEVIL MAY CRY!!!!!

Dante: sup.
Wait a minute...how do I know who this guy is?
author: don't think about it, just go with it.
Ah ok.
Dante: say kid, you have the potential to become the most overpowered character in this story in just one timeskip, how about you come with me and I teach you everything I know?
MC: potential? dude, I got my ass beaten by a 6-year-old girl and I barely made it to that shithole that I called house without dying. do you really see any potential in me?
Dante: honestly? no, but I have to take you with me in other to plot to progress so whatcha say? wanna come with me?
MC:.....do I really have a choice?
Dante: no.
* TIMESKIP brought to you by MC doing something cringe*
MC: Goddamn Dante! I am really OP now.
Dante: told ya, all it takes is a time skip to become op in an abused and neglected story.
MC: okay so what happens now?
Dante: you go to beacon's academy.
MC: WHAT?! WHY?!
Dante: because the author can't write an original story so he has to write everything that happens in the show and insert you in it.
MC: wouldn't my presence cause some sort of change to the plot?
Dante: if this was a good book it would but unfortunately we're in a mediocre book at best.
MC: damn...
Dante: yeah....also you gonna forgive your family because they'll buy you gifts and gifts are totally worth years of physical and mental abuse.
MC: FFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

And that's pretty much every abused and neglected male reader book back in 2019, Now the authors seem to have forgotten about rwby and seem to be focusing on bnha but honestly, it's still the same thing in another universe. there are some good books with these themes but they are very few in between. To tell you the truth, I can't really recommend any book with those tags, most of them are unfinished trash that have more pages talking about the powers and weapons of the main character instead of telling a story.
