Vic's POV~~
I pull into the gravel driveway of our trailer and notice a black Honda and two police cars with the lights flashing rapidly in the yard. I turn off the headlights, hoping no one notices me and look into the window of Mike and I's bedroom, where the window is open. Mike is sitting on the bed, his cheeks bright and wet with frustration and he's running his hands through his hair, talking to someone and glancing up every once in a while, I can't help but assume that he's answering questions from the police. Then I look at the window in the kitchen and see Mama standing next to a thin woman with black stringy hair and a yoga outfit on and they're both crying and talking to two policemen. "Where's Papa?" I whisper, shakily. "K-Kellin." I groan, "Kellin!" I demand. He shoots up from sleep and looks around, his big eyes puffy and his lips poking out. He squints at the scene and his eyes slowly grow bigger until they get into a panic state and he grunts, "Shit." under his breath. "Pull out!" he says, hurriedly, "Go go go!"
"But, Mama! And who is that other lady? Oh, Mama must be worried sick!"
"Vic, go, now! Trust me!" he demands.
I bite my lip and roll my eyes, feeling an urge to do as he says, I put the car in reverse and back out, unsure of where to go from there.
"Switch seats with me." Kellin mumbles. Kellin sits back flat and holds his arms up and I crawl over and press myself flat against the door as he slides over to the drivers seat. I buckle up as he puts the car in drive and peels out. I grab onto the door handle, a million things running through my mind, I'm supposed to be a good role-model for Mike, Mama is probably worried sick, Papa hates me for sure now, no no no, this is the last thing I need right now. "Kellin, stop! We need to go back, now!" I demand.
"No, are you crazy? My mom already hates me enough, your parents hate you enough."
"My parents don't hate me, Kellin. You know I love you, but don't pull me into this whole thing with you. My life was perfectly- No, stop, take me home! Now!" I demand.
"Vic, the cops are involved, it's best for us to just stake out at the lake tonight, come back in the morning and let everyone know we're fine."
"Whatever Kellin, whatever. You may not have anything to live fo-"
"What!? I don't have anything to live for? Have you no-"
"You live your life having sex, doing drugs and drinking, WHAT DO YOU DO THAT'S PRODUCTIVE!?"
"I fell in love with you, I fell in love with the guy I want to spend the rest of my life with! Isn't that something?"
"Oh, my God, Kellin you're so dramatic! This isn't Degrassi or fuckin' Romeo and Juliet, okay? This isn't going to work!" I shout, pounding my fists on the dashboard.
"Vic, this is wrong. We start dating, have sex and break up in one day. We can't do that. Don't leave me." He says, slowing the car down the farther away from the house we get.
"You know what, I don't even care. I'm going to sleep." I mumble. I pull the seat back and curl up against the door, the easiest way for me to fall asleep in a car, and stare out the window, trying to scare myself by making me believe I see monsters that aren't even out there.
Kellin's POV~~
I sigh and chew on the inside of my cheek, then I remember something Vic said that I hadn't noticed before, "Vic,"
"What?"
"You said there was a lady inside your house with your mom..."
"Yeah, and?" He lies on his back and look over at me.
"Who was she?"
"I don't know, I was asking yo-"
"What did she look like?"
"Long, black, stringy hair, skinny lady, fancy yoga suit on."
"Ah, fuck." I hit the steering wheel. We're both quiet for a long time. Then Vic asks, "Who was she, Kellin?" I stay quiet for a bit, resting my elbow on the door and rubbing my chin with my hand, "My mom." Silence. "Why was she there?" More silence. "I don't know, I didn't even think she-" I get quiet as I realize that I'm tearing up. I clutch onto the steering wheel as my hands begin to shake. I curse repetitively under my breath as I become more and more upset. "Hey..." Vic says gently. "Hey, hey, hey." he sits up hurriedly and rubs my back gently, "Babe, what's up? Is it your mom?"
"No, I'm just-" I pull over and stomp on the brakes. I cover my face with my hands and I remember the way Vic silently sobbed in the library. At least I know I'm not the only one that's ever felt like this. At least I know he knows how I feel. "Baby, talk to me." he says calmly. "I'm a lie, dude. I mean, my friends call me Kellin Quinn and Mr. Quinn. They don't even know my name, Vic."
"Kellin Bostwick," he says, "Yeah, I meant to ask about that... not sure if now's the best ti-"
"My dad. Uh, Jeuse he uh-Oh God, okay, Kellin here we go. Okay, My mom and dad got a Divorce when I was three. He promised he would take care of me but, three days before my fourth birthday he was just... gone. My brothers and sisters didn't seem as affected by it but-I don't know, I didn't really care at first. I didn't want to believe it, I just kept telling myself he wouldn't do it, he'll be back, he just got mad. But every day that went by and he didn't come home, I guess I just slowly began believing it more and more and I didn't even realize it. Next thing I know, I hate the guy and I'm shooting potatoes out of freakin' potato guns in the football field."
"Hey!" Vic pouts. I look over at him and raise an eyebrow quizzically, "That was you? You almost hit me!"
"Sorry," I sigh. He's quiet for a bit, chewing on his lip, then he says, "I though you were an only child."
"Nope, two older brothers and two younger sisters." he gets quiet again. "One more question,"
"What?"
"Why don't you just go by Kellin Bostwick?"
"It reminds me too much of him. I want to limit what all we have in common..."
"Oh."
"Vic," I say after a while, "If you harm yourself ever again I will put you in a straight jacket and lock you in my fucking closet." he takes my hand and locks our fingers together, "Thanks." I kiss him on the cheek and look around, "We only have about five more minutes until we get to the lake, we'll need to hide the car though so they won't find us."
"Kay."
"Now," I say, pulling back onto the road, "Sing to me, my love!"
"Wha-what makes you think I can sing?"
"You're the lead singer of your baannnndddd." I chime.
"Ugh, I hate you." he playfully punches me. I chuckle and we stay quiet the rest of the way to the lake, the darkness of outside swallowing us whole.
