It was another late night, the moon seemed to be the only thing lighting up the dim town. Then again, Hexton, always had a gloom to it, maybe due to the constant rain or the fog that never seemed to leave the city.
The city's gloomy and dark aesthetic seemed to draw in the wrong type of people, leaving what use to be a small city, into that of a criminal enterprise. This left Hexton in shambles, as the government had lost almost all its power and the criminals were now running the show.
What use to have a full and alive nightlife was now turned into that of a dead city, so quiet that you could hear the sounds of water hitting the pavement.
Hexton was now one of those metropolia that only had a handful of shops that dared to remain open during the night and the few that did were usually twenty-four-hour cafés or money laundering businesses, that criminals used to smuggle money out of.
That's who you'd hope that's who you would run into on a gloomy night, a small lowlife drug lord with no true danger to them, other than an empty threat and a gun pointed at your head. They were nothing compared to the true horrors that roamed the streets late at night, looking for any reason to fight someone or even kill.
See Hexton was well known for two things, bad weather and worse people. Most lowlife people would move to the town, wanting to get their name out there and run the streets, becoming the next big criminal. It usually ended terribly with them, they ended up on the news at four, for getting killed by the actual villains of the story.
The city was filled with average people as well. Those who didn't want to live a life of crime yet were born into the big city and couldn't seem to find their way out. Due to the unsafe environment, many of those people had their own rules for survival in Hexton.
Lock your doors, don't stay out too late, avoid conflict, don't play hero, keep a low profile and always be ready to run. If you did that, you had a better chance of surviving the night and not ending up as another casualty.
The nighttime left the streets very desolate unless you were of a criminal or an unlucky soul who happen to be roaming the streets late. The nightlife kept most people off the streets and in the clubs, allowing the people who cause no harm to get home safely.
That was only if the biggest villain wasn't roaming the streets. Hexton called him, Salem.
The male was covered in dark tattoos, so much so that it almost made him look like his torso and arms were blacked out. His face was a reminder that even the beautiful can be dammed. Salem had a muscular, tapered jaw and a strong jawline. His cheeks were hollowed and Salem's nose was wide and flattened, with a septum piercing. He held fierce golden eyes, that glowed in the night like an animal.
Those eyes were his power, once you locked on to them, you would be compelled to Salem instantly, you'd fall under a trance and he could manipulate you into anything. That wasn't what made him the most dangerous. Salem was a soul eater, if you even dared to look at him wrongly, he would grab you by the throat and suck out your soul.
The many who have witnessed it said his neck and shoulders would start to glow the same golden color as his eyes, peeking through the many dark tattoos.
The soul looked like a gust of smoke entering his mouth and once the smoke vanished so did the glow. Salem would drop the now lifeless body and walk over it as if it was nothing. If anything, the dead body was a minor inconvenience to him, seeing as he did have to step over the thing.
Yet, it was normal, almost everyone in the city had seen a dead body before and it was as normal as brushing your teeth in the morning.
That's just how it went in Hexton though, the city was in disarray and no one could stop it. The government didn't run the city, the villains did.
And Salem was the biggest villain of them all.
