Cersei kissed Daenerys on the neck lightly as she brushed past her to receive Varys at the door of their bedchamber. Two months they had been married now, and both of them had quickly grown accustomed to their new life. Cersei remained the sole sovereign of the Seven Kingdoms - as if that had ever been up for debate - with Daenerys close by her side as Hand of the Queen. "Let him wait", Daenerys whispered and grabbed Cersei by the waist. "He's good at that." "And he's good at listening to things better unheard", Cersei replied with a wink, not before taking the time to give her wife a quick kiss. She opened the door and let Varys enter. "What is it?", she asked. The eunuch rubbed his powdered hands together. "Do you recall what I told you at the council meeting two months past?" "Are you assuming I remember every little whisper you have told me about? Be a little more specific, I don't have all day." "Certainly, Your Grace. I am referring to the rumors about Lord Baelish. Last we heard, he was trying to gather highborn Lords and Ladies from all of Westeros to his cause, though what cause that was remained a mystery at the time. But new information has reached me yesterday." He paused, as if to create suspense, but it only irritated Cersei. "Get on with it, if you will." "Word is, he has acquired a dragon egg and is attempting to hatch it." Dany laughed out loud at that. Cersei turned to look at her. "A dragon egg?", the Targaryen cheered. "Might be he found a pretty stone, but I can assure you, no dragon will crawl from it under his care." "And you are certain?", Cersei asked. "If he actually managed to hatch it somehow..." "Believe me, dear wife, only a sacrifice of great magical power could activate the eggs. Littlefinger doesn't know enough about dragons to be aware of the requirements." Cersei nodded, the answer satisfied her. "Your Grace, my Lady", Varys interrupted. "I do believe it would be wise to respond to his... taunts anyway. If the crown stays inactive as challengers arise, the people might think you weak, or craven. It would be best to prove that Baelish has nothing on your strength, and that the people need not fear any damage to their order." This seemed reasonable enough to Cersei, still she thought it pathetic to rise against mere threats. "Let him gather for a little while longer", she said. "If he proves to make any actual stand against us, we can pursue your plan. If he's all bark and no bite, we have shown that we are not easily scared by would-be usurpers." This was a solution everyone could agree with. So Varys left with the promise to come to her immediately if he learned anything of importance. Cersei and Daenerys were on their own again. "I believe we have the rest of the day off", Cersei said. "What do you want to do?" "I think an afternoon out of the city would do us both well", Daenerys suggested. "How about we go riding?" "Sounds lovely", Cersei agreed. "Where to?" "Just out and about in the countryside, I'd say. We could ride to the Godswood as well." "I don't want anything to do with the Gods of the North", she declared, "but if we ride out by the Mud Gate, we will come by a beautiful stretch of land about half an hour from here." "Sounds good to me", Daenerys smiled.
They rode out shortly after, Dany on her silver and Cersei on a chestnut mare from the royal stables. The two women had donned gowns more fit for riding cushioned with velvet, green for Cersei and purple for Daenerys. Soon, they arrived at the meadow Cersei had referred to: it truly was a beautiful place, rich with autumn flowers that filled the air with enticing scents and framed by a range of large oaks and flimsy willows. They dismounted and led their horses to a small creek to let them drink and hobbled them. Today, they had wanted no disturbance of their serene little trip, so they had not brought any guards, squires or servants with them. To the right of the clearing was a smooth rock surface that ended in a grassy slope down toward the edge of the trees. They sat down on the stone plateau and looked out over the landscape. Neither of them said anything for a while, enjoying the nature around them. Dany placed her hand on the small of Cersei's back and leaned her head against her shoulder. Cupping her cheek with one hand, Cersei kissed Dany and shifted her seating position to embrace her. The two women kissed passionately, until Dany lost her balance and slipped off the rock with a surprised noise, pulling Cersei down with her. They tumbled down the slope, getting grass all over themselves, and were laughing heartily by the time they could get up. "Your gown", Cersei exclaimed with a pitying chuckle and pointed at the green spots that flecked the soft purple of Dany's dress. Daenerys only laughed it off. "You won't find this pattern anywhere else."
It was dusk when they returned, near time for supper. Daenerys went to get changed while Cersei sat in her solar to look through some letters that the maester had brought while they were away. One caught her eye, it was a (very) belated congratulation letter for their wedding. Had it really been two months already? It felt like so much less, and still life with her wife had already become standard to Cersei. It really was strange how much could change in such a short time: before that day, she would have never in a million dreams imagined that she would ever come to like the Targaryen girl, let alone love her. But now here she was, happier than ever and ready to spend the rest of her life like this. "Do you want to come eat?" Daenerys walked back into the room, clad in a translucent bedrobe that made Cersei try to hide a gasp before she could reply. "Gladly", she smiled, and all was well.
