Forty years ago, the Kingdom of Vaidora was the strongest nation in the world. They were the bustling center of all trade and had the most put-together royal family in centuries. King Jack and Queen Roseann had given birth to two lovely little boys, Prince Lee and Prince Tomas, born sixteen minutes apart.
The boys grew up close, mirroring everything they did after the other. The kingdom was simply in love with the young Princes and wanted nothing more than to shower them with admiration and adoration.
The two aged quickly, their 1st birthday quickly becoming their 5th and their 5th birthday quickly becoming their 10th. Before the kingdom knew it, Prince Lee and Prince Tomas were two days away from their 18th birthday, making them eligible for the next Selection.
Little talk had been had amongst the commoners regarding the selection. There were plenty of men and women who were of age to enter but it had been so long since a Selection had occurred properly. The current King and Queen had wed in secret, shocking the entire kingdom and the King and Queen before Jack and Roseann had been a longtime arranged marriage between a foreign county and Vaidora.
The night before the twins' birthday, a monstrous storm ripped through the kingdom. It tore through houses and businesses and made it's way right through the castle. Hundreds of innocents were killed, including the King and Queen of Vaidora. Prince Tomas was left in a coma while Prince Lee was hospitalized for a week and released, choosing to spend most of his time in his brother's hospital room.
When Tomas awoke, Lee was no longer by his side. Two months had gone by and the country had needed a leader. Lee had decided to step up, taking the vacant throne in wake of his father's death. He had met a woman many months before the storm but was hastened to marry her to give the kingdom a queen, giving way to King Lee and Queen Autumn of the Kingdom of Vaidora.
With Lee already in power, Tomas felt useless and empty. He went to his brother in hopes of encouraging him to step down and let the kingdom burn in the wake of their parent's death but Lee felt too much responsibility to uphold their family name. Tomas grew angry and spiteful. He hated his brother for taking the kingdom when it wasn't either of theirs to take. His parents should have never died and even if they till had, it was Tomas that should have taken the kingdom, not Lee.
As time went on, Tomas' anger did not subside. He began to gain followers, individuals who felt as though Lee was not the rightful king. They grew stronger as a whole, feeding off on another's anger. And then the wall was built.
King Lee and Queen Autumn had been hearing whispers about an uprising led by Tomas and they knew they had to act. Years had passed since their parents' death and Tomas had not healed in anyway. Autumn was 8 months pregnant with the next heir to the kingdom and Lee knew he could take no risks so a treaty was drawn up.
From the middle of the kingdom to the east would henceforth belong to Tomas and be known as the Kingdom of Cupis. From the middle of the kingdom to the west would continue to be known as the Kingdom of Vaidora and would all belong to Lee. Commoners were free to live in the kingdom of their choosing without consequence. Tomas and his followers reluctantly agreed and disappeared for several years.
Life in Vaidora continued on as normal. Queen Autumn gave birth to a healthy baby boy who they named Rowan. Shortly after Rowan's birth, the King and Queen were happy to announce their second pregnancy, this time with a baby girl. A quick 11 months after Prince Rowan was born, Princess Roselyn was introduced to the Kingdom of Vaidora.
The new Prince and Princess grew up close as can be. They shared everything and mirrored all of the actions and identities off the other. They were inseparable even through the roughest of times. King Lee and Queen Autumn fought hard to shield their children from the unnecessary evil that lurked just beyond Vaidora's wall but they knew the shielding was only temporary.
When the siblings began to come of age, rumbles of war had come about. Talk of Tomas and his army invading the castle to kill Lee and overtake Vaidora were stronger than ever. Rowan and Roselyn knew of their uncle but never of his maniac ways. And before anybody knew it, everything was brought to pieces right in front of their eyes.
The war was gorey and bloody. It lasted for four months, long enough for Rowan to turn 20 and Roselyn to turn 19. King Lee and Queen Autumn managed to keep themselves and their castle safe but those on the outside did not fair as well. As least 700 casualties were estimated and no end was in sight. No end until the message came from Tomas.
The message read:
" Dearest Brother,
I've killed at least a half dozen of your men and quadruple the amount of your people. I can only imagine that things begin to look bad when a King can't protect his people. But, alas, I've grown tired of playing the killing game and am writing to offer a truce.
You see, I never had children as you very well know. Something about the besmirched younger-brother-living-in-the-shadows has never quite done it for the ladies. This being said, I need an heir for my kingdom to take over when your's inevitable falls.
Should you wish the war to end, I propose we hold a Selection between our two kingdoms. 16 of my finest men and women will be housed in your castle for 3 months. Your son and daughter will get to know these 16 individuals and by the time the 3 months is up, they will have eliminated 14 of them and fallen in love with 2.
Once all is said and done, one of your lovely children will come to live in Cupis until my time as King is through and then I will have an heir to take over my kingdom.
SIncerely,
King Tomas of the Kingdom Cupis."
And so... the Selection has begun.
