☕︎

the sky filled in with a
calming blue,
the winds heavy,
and the snow falls.

mei watched the white
flakes shimmer from
the sky, sitting in
a warm café.

sighing, she found the
sight really relaxing.

work at the hospital
has been rough these
past few months,
luckily she was able
to get a day off

"excuse me, miss?
i'm here for your
order, if you're
ready?"
mei snapped her
head in the voices
direction.

a pretty girl near her
age stood infront of
her, notepad in hand.

mei looked at the
bartenders nametag
'Jie Wang'
it read.

"can i get a black coffee
and a cheese cake slice?"
mei responded,
she noticed the waitress
smiling at her, softly.

"of course, is that all,
beautiful?"
Jie asked, writing
down mei's order.

the name beautiful
caught mei off guard,
'such a sudden compliment'
mei thought.

"yes, that'll be all"
mei smiled back,
returning the kindess
of the other.

"what's the name
for your order?"
jir continued, tilting
her head in question.

mei thought the waitress
was really cute, but
she didn't attempt to
flirt, she didn't want to
assume.

"mei guo, thank you."
jie nodded, saying
that her order will
be here soon.

again, mei continues
to look out the window,
watching the icy flakes
meet the snow.

-
"chen, can you brew
a black coffee?
i need to get a
cheese cake slice
for this really cute
customer"
jie smiled, thinking about
mei's cute face.

jie had noticed mei
when she first walked in
the café, so she had
to take her order

"you and your gay ass!
this is work, not
a love story! but..
yea, i'll make it
for you"
chen laughed at his
friends sudden café crush

"she's not even
pretty, date me
instead~"
jie's other coworker,
yuanjun mentioned.

jie never really liked
yuanjun, he was
always uncomfortablely
flirty.

"eh, no. anyways,
i should write my
number on a napkin
and give it to her"
jie lowkey ignoring
yuanjuns request.

"ahh, that's so cute!
you should def
do that!"
chen fanboy'd over
his friends little
crush.

yuanjun rolled his eyes,
going to take a customers
order.

chen handed jie the
coffee, and jie went
to give mei
her coffee and
cake.

when jie returned
to mei, she had just
got off a phone call.

"here you are, black
coffee and cheese cake,
is that all?"
jie said while
getting ready to
give her the napkin

"yes, yes, that's all!"
mei said, packing her cake
and other belongings
in a hurry, which jie
noticed.

"would you like a
napki-"

"sorry, i really don't
have time to talk.
i have a work emergency,
thank you!"
mei grabbed her coffee
and ran to her car, driving
off into the streets of
shanghai.

'shit'
jie thought, putting
the napkin to her pocket
and going back
behind the counter.

mei arrived at work,
hurrily signing in
and running to room
144A

there layed her sickest
patient, Zihao, a 13
year old boy who suffered
with stage 3 cancer.

the boy was also her
dead brothers son, her nephew.

"haohao, are you okay?
i heard what happened.
do you need anything?
did you take your medicine-"

"i'm okay now,
auntie. thank you
for checking on me
so fast."
zihao said in between
coughs.

mei just sighed
and nodded, happy
her nephew is alright.

she's been taking care
of zihao ever since
his father died 4 years
ago.

however, not too long
after that, zihao was
diagnosed with cancer.

"auntie, can you
brush my hair?"
zihao asked in a mumble,
handing her his hair
brush

"of course, haohao."
mei nodded, taking his brush,
getting on his hospital bed,
and sat behind him carefully brushing.

brush after brush,
bundles of zihao's hair
came out, falling onto
mei's lap.

tears rolled down
mei's face, whipping each
one that fell to her cheek.

"auntie meimei,
please don't cry,
i'll be okay and when
i get better, we can go
to the garden grandma
used to take us to, okay?"
zihao mumbled, getting sleepy
as the time passes

"of course, haohao,
sorry.."
mei whipped her tears,
continuing to brush his hair
as more fell into her lap.

'don't leave so soon, haohao.
we still have so much time
to spend together'
