There were some days that Ashley Parker regretted accepting a job at Scoops Ahoy, despite the desperation for financial independence that lingered in her mind. When she had first adorned that obnoxious blue sailors uniform, she believed the role would be tolerable, just something to pass time in this boring town but it didn't take long for her to realize that this job was practically the bane of her existence, something that she dreaded every time her name had appeared on the schedule.
Exhaustion was the primary cause of Ashley's suffering, not being able to handle the constant rush of impatient customers in the shop, who constantly demanded for her attention. She could barely have a moment to breath, always being forced to tend to the endless amount responsibilities that had been bestowed upon her due to the understaffing issue that her manager promised to solve but had done nothing about.
Ashley's patience was being stretched thin, especially after discovering that she was being paid below minimum wage (which was only $4 in Indiana). Whether it be struggling to scoop out the rock solid ice cream, working unnecessary long hours with basically no breaks or serving those ungrateful customers with a fake smile plastered on her face, she had to suppress the urge to just rip off her stupid sailor hat and storm out in anger.
But the only thing that was holding her back from officially quitting was Robin Buckley, the pretty girl who had the ability to make every shift feel somewhat bearable. Her nervous rambles, sarcastic comments, infectious laugh and doe eyes were enough to melt away the heavy weight of stress and frustration that loomed over Ashley's figure. She could barely spare glance at the girl without feeling an overwhelming heat flood her system, accompanied by an increase heart rate.
Ashley knew that this physical reaction was an indication that she was experiencing the beginning stage of a crush, something that she swore would not happen but she couldn't control her feelings that had only begun to grow deeper with every interaction they had. She had tried to suppress those feelings, wanting to focus all of her attention on getting through her unbearably long and soul draining shifts because it meant that she was one step closer to finally leaving this shitty job and the shitty town that she undeniably despised.
The atmosphere at Scoops Ahoy was still buzzing with nautical music and excited customers, despite the end of the work day was nearing. Everyone was desperate to get a taste of the newest flavour that had practically been advertised on every free surface in the mall. The USS butterscotch, a creamy vanilla base with ripples of salty caramel and pieces of the crunch toffee mixed into the frozen mixture was mouthwatering to say the least, practically attracting every person who held even a sliver of love for ice cream.
