You always thought you would be excited to be invited to your first-ever Christmas party, but it was the opposite. It wasn't a regular party like you had always imagined; it was being run by Jesse—the rich boy in your school, known for his lavish lifestyle and heavy pockets. While it was clear that he was wealthy, he also held enough popularity that declared him King of your school. His parties were the stuff of legends, attended by the elite crowd of your school, with only the closest friends and those deemed worthy by Jesse himself receiving an invitation.

Now, against all odds, Jesse had extended the same sacred invitation to you and your tiny friend group. You were more than grateful, but with that gratitude came immense pressure. You couldn't show up in a regular outfit—doing so would risk becoming a joke among the coolest kids in school. As you stared at your closet, you felt a wave of anxiety crash over you. Thoughts raced through your mind: What would the others wear? How could you possibly stand out without looking desperate? This was your chance to fit in, to escape the shadow of being 'just another nobody.' The stakes felt impossibly high, and all you could think about was what you could wear to stand out.

You spent nearly an hour staring at your closet before finally choosing one of your nicest, coolest tops paired with some comfortable sweatpants. It created the vibe you aimed for—a relaxed and laid-back look. Your hair was another story, but you managed to pull yourself together just in time for your friends to arrive in their car.

"Mom, Dad! I am going out!" you yelled to your parents as you raced down the stairs to get in your friend's car.

It wasn't like your parents would care though, seeing as how they didn't even respond. They never cared where you went, even if you wished they did. You gritted your jaw sternly and walked out the hose, swiftly locking the door behind you before you ran to the SUV one of your friends drove. The door welcomed you into its warmth, not allowing you to feel the crisp of the winter cold. "Whoo.." You breathed a shaky sigh of relief.

"Are you ready? We've got the GPS all set and ready to go!" Maria squealed with excitement. She had the biggest crush on Jesse and, despite your warnings not to get her hopes up, she was convinced that this party would offer her a chance to catch his attention. Jesse only dated the popular girls—the kind with long, flowing hair and model-like features. Not to undermine Maria, but it was hard to see her fitting into Jesse's typical preferences. You winced at the thought, knowing deep down that she was beautiful, but Jesse's standards seemed impossibly high for your friend group.

"Yep.. all ready." You responded with a weak smile that betrayed your sense of guilt.
The rest of your friends were all radiating excitement, but you felt your nerves beginning to take over. You longed for this chance just as much as they did, eager to fit in with a larger crowd. Yet, there was a nagging feeling in your gut that this party might not be everything you had hoped for. You tried to dismiss it as your usual pessimistic tendencies, but deep down, you couldn't shake off the warning signs.

The car drive was long. You and your friend occupied yourselves with playing phone games, whining whenever you beat one another, and resorting to cheating by shoving arms. It was fun, and by the time you guys had finished your fifth round, the car was parked near the large home. It was humougous, tall with lights glowing down the driveway to the entrance. It was like walking the steps up to heaven, beautiful and grand. You let out a soft gasp as you exited the car, taking in the sight. Your friends were just as speechless as you were, their eyes wide.
