chapter 2 edited
I saw the entire group pacing back and forth, cursing on how they could find a dancer in one and a half day. I, on the other hand, was draping curtains in the store room and listening to them. I really felt bad. Sure, Ashley was the last person I was bothered about, but still. The fest was important to me—I was allowed to be worried.
After about 20 minutes, I finally finished with my work. Mostly people had already left the rehearsal hall by then; I think I was the only one left.
I quickly locked the room. And I was almost getting out of the hall when something caught my eyes-- the stereo. It looked great, and expensive, and quite a wonder of technology. Something that I breathed for. I quickly started looking away, trying not to get tempted by the amazing technology. But too late. My greed got over me, and I couldn’t control myself from once touching and feeling it.
You might think I was a mental case, but deal with it. I was obsessed by this piece of technology. I quickly scanned the place to see that that no one was there. When I was pretty sure about it, I quickly switched on the player and connected it with my I-pod (also one of the things I counted as my oxygen).
I shuffled through my list of songs when the song I was finding came on; I hit the play button until Timbaland and Justin Timberlake started blasting through the speakers.
Without any second thoughts, my brain stopped working and my heart took the lead like it was the boss of me. And my body obeyed the order and I found myself moving with the beats of the song.
I started moving my body to the beats, going from one place to another like this was the only that mattered in my life.
I danced, I danced for I don’t know how long, and I was taking spins faster and faster until I bumped into something. Okay, not something, but someone because whoever he was, stopped me from hitting the ground backwards. I shut my eyes, not to knowing what to do, and hid my face in chest of a guy. I wasn’t as shocked about falling, as I was about having been caught.
My secret was out—and I didn’t know whether to be afraid about it or run from there.
The guy held my arms, and I was too scared to face him because he caught me dancing in the rehearsal hall without permission, and on top of that, he now knew that I danced. My secret was now not a secret.
God, I was so dead right now! Please help me, please, I kept chanting.
We broke away from each other, and I just stood there with my eyes closed, not daring to see who it was that had seen me dancing, losing myself over to my intuition.
“Are you going to open your eyes?” Luke’s attractive voice said, and I started.
Shit, shit, shit! Out of all the people in the world, my mind thought. I shook my head violently.
“I’m not that scary, you know,” he said teasingly, and I slowly popped open one eye, watching him warily. What was I supposed to say to him now?
“What are you doing here” I asked sternly. He smirked. “Well, I can ask the same, but I know what you are doing, so just drop it.”
I looked and twisted my fingers nervously. “Um… so, okay, you saw that. Please don’t tell anyone!” I quickly said, and looked up at him. “I don’t like telling people that I dance, so I hope you understand… besides, it’s just a hobby. Nothing else. I actually really suck at it. You must have seen it now, yeah?” okay, Natalie, you’re babbling now, my mind said. Flushing, I stopped, and started moving away to grab my stuff. “I’m going to go now. I hope you’ll do what I said. About not telling anyone.”
I started going out, but suddenly he pulled me back to face him.
I let out a surprised yelp, and ended up looking into his eyes. And ironically, he was the calm one while I was feeling like a thief caught stealing.
“Look, I saw you dancing, and you dance amazingly well. So… I was thinking… you know what happened with Ashley, right?” he said, a little hesitantly. My eyes widened, and I couldn’t believe what he was saying.
I just stared mutely at him.
He sighed. “Look, can you be our lead dancer?” he asked seriously. I think the world just stopped spinning.
“What?”
“Will you be our lead dancer?” he repeated. “We don’t have much time, and you already know how important it is. I’m sure you’ll be able to do it.”
I gulped. “No, sorry, but dance is not my thing. I just do it as a hobby,” I stuttered.
He narrowed his eyes at me, releasing my hand, and said, “Really? You sure?”
“Absolutely,” I tried to sound bright about it.
“I can’t be your lead dancer, Luke,” I added a little more seriously. “I’m sorry.”
He just stared at me in despair, and I turned around and left the place, all the while wondering what just happened.
Stupid me and my idiotic addiction to new technology! Now Luke knew about my dancing, something that I hadn’t wanted anyone to know, and he’d also asked me to be his lead dancer. But I couldn’t possibly do it, could I?
I calmed myself, and hoped everything would be normal. I just hoped he’d lock the rehearsal room, and more than that, I hoped he wouldn’t tell anyone what he saw today.
