Zeus Mendez's Ranch

"Baby, you need to wake up."

I slowly opened my eyes and waited for them to adjust to the darkness of the room. "Freddie?" I softly called out.

But, to my disappointment, there wasn't a response.

I slowly sat up on the bed to gather myself. My body was still heavy as well as my eyelids. Whatever that nurse gave me really did a number on me. On the nightstand, beside the bed, there was a note. Turning on the lamp, I began reading the note out loud. "Sorry about the sleeping pills but you were trippin' bad...Mateo."

"Sleeping pills? asshole!" I yelled angrily, tearing the note up.

The bedroom door opens, interrupting my fit. Mateo peeks his head around it.

"You got a lot of nerve!" I yell.

He raises his hand in defense and walks further into the room, "Aye, I did what I had to do. My uncle was going to get rid of your ass with all that screaming you were doing."

"Whatever," I respond with a raspy tone.

"See, damn near lost your voice with all that yelling, you want some hot tea or something?"

"Why? So, you can drug me again? I'll pass. I want to go get some air." Even in this spacious room, I felt like the walls were closing in on me.

"You have central air." He argued.

"I don't care, I want to go outside."

"Fine. I'll take you for a ride on the golf cart again. Do you need some help?"

"Nope." I decline. "I got it."

            "You sure?"

            "You've done enough, thank you."

Mateo tries to cover his laughter as I slowly walk over to my sandals. Personally, I didn't find shit funny. I was drugged.

It took us about five minutes to walk through the house to get to the golf cart. By the time we got there, I was ready to pass out again. Mateo makes sure that I was buckled safe and secured before hopping in the driver's seat.

            "You ready?"

            I nod, yes.

The drive to the lake was a silent one.

I was too angry to say a word to him.

Mateo knew it as well. He would begin to say something and then stop himself. An apology wasn't going to make me get over it. If he wanted me to forgive him, he would have to turn on his uncle.

Something I can't see him doing.

"You are something else, you know that?"

Responding dryly, "So I've been told."

"Stubborn like a bull."

Ignoring his comment, I noticed the increase in guards around the property, walking around the green scenery with assault rifles in their hands.

"What with all the extra guns?"

Mateo stares straight ahead, "That's just Zeus being Zeus."
