"Okay." Was all Hope managed to get out. Her heart was six feet under and sinking. She couldn't bare to look into Josie's dark brown eyes; she stared at her shoes instead.
"Hope..." Josie trailed off, placing her soft fingers under Hope's chin, tilting her head up to look into the teary sea of blue.
Hope's stomach was filled with butterflies.
They stared into each other's eyes for a long minute.
"I've got to go." Replied the girl with chocolate brown eyes. "I don't know what's got into you lately."
"Got into me..?" She sniffed as Josie began to walk away. "Josette Saltzman, come back here right now. You can't just leave mid conversation."
"Yes, I can."
"What's got into you?" Hope scoffed, repeating Josie's words.
"You're just jealous, Hope."
She didn't deny it.
"I've got a girl. And the girl you want... she doesn't want you. No one will ever want a Mikaelson."
Hope laughed out loud — her blue eyes turning gold.
Josie continued walking away.
Hope didn't follow.
They both continued the day as normal — attending classes — Josie didn't turn up to History of Magic again.
So Hope skipped it again.
She went straight to Josie's dorm.
Josie opened the door today "Hope."
"Josie. I am so sorry." She stared into the eyes of her comfort.
Cold eyes stared back.
"So... this is going to effect our friendship?"
Josie didn't answer.
"Because I can't deal with that. I love you Josette. I need you."
"I love you too Hope, just not in the same way you mean it."
"I can live with that, but I cannot live without you."
"I'm sorry Hope, for what I said."
Hope's returning smile was enough for anyone to fall in love. Josie had never looked at Hope in that way before.
The way she was now.
Her heart stopped and picked up again. Hope heard it.
She giggles. "Jo, are you okay?"
"Uh," she replied absentmindedly "yeah."
Hope wrapped her arms tightly around Josie's neck, almost knocked her over with the force of the hug.
"I'll see you later, Josie." Hope turned and walked down the corridor.
Josie stood in the doorway for an extra minute; staring after Hope.
"Josie..." the voice came from inside Josie's room.
Penelope Park.
As Josie turned slowly, she saw Penelope for who she really was — she only wanted the new, confident Josie.
Hope had come up to her as the old Josie. Hope wanted Josie either way.
"I can't do this anymore, Pen."
"What."
"I can't do this." She gestured from Penelope to herself.
"I know what you meant, I'm not stupid."
"You broke up with me because you didn't like the old me. You like the new me, but she's isn't really me."
"And now you're breaking up with me?"
"Yes."
Josie was empty.
Empty until she remembered the girl down the hall.
