it was finally time to go back to cousin's beach, my favorite place on the planet. it was the escape from all my troubles, usually but not this year. this year i had to face conrad since we had broken up here 10 months prior. i was mainly just glad to be getting away from the split homes and aunty laurel knew that. even though she wasn't really my aunt now she took care of me better than anyone other than dad. i was yelling at the top of my lungs to a song with belly.

"girls can we lower the music a little," laurel asked.

"yeah i can't stand your horrid voices," steven said.

"oh shush you're just jelly," i replied.

"pfhh," steven mumbled. the music was turned lower and belly and i started playing car games. she'd really grown up in the past year and she was extremely pretty. it worried me, last summer she was one of the reasons conrad and i broke up but she didn't know that. i knew she always had a crush on him i just wasn't sure if this summer it could be different and he would go for belly now. i wasn't going to let him get in the way of my summer but i couldn't help but feel like things didn't actually end last summer.

we stopped at a gas station and belly and i grabbed snacks while laurel went to the bathroom. the cashier was eyeing us and we giggled to each other. we started checking out and he asked, "are you from here?"

"we just come for summers," i replied.

"oh yeah i remember you. not you though," he said to belly, "you guys should come to the bonfire tonight."

"oh yeah sounds great," i said and checked out. laurel came out of the bathroom and started to leave with us. "see you guys then," he said.

"what is he talking about," laurel questioned.

"nothing," belly said and we ran back to the car.

there it was the house i'd thought that i'd be in forever when i was with conrad. the car pulled in and jeremiah was running out already. belly and i got out and jere gave both of us a hug. then there he was, looking all broody and sad. he seemed to light up a tiny bit when he saw us though. he talked to belly first and then turned to me. i smiled at him, what else was i supposed to do?

"hey," conrad said.

"hey," i replied. then jere distracted him with a "belly" flop. i grabbed my bags and went upstairs to unpack. my room was still across from conrad's and was left exactly how i left it apart from one thing. on my desk was a box. inside the box was the infinity necklace conrad had given me when we started dating almost 2 years ago. i left it in his room when we left last summer, showing to him that i was gone. why did he give me it back? i know infinity was supposed to be forever but not after last summer. the yelling and screaming that led to tears and broken hearts was not supposed to be our infinity. why did he have to do this to me? i called shayla and talked to her about it and also about the debutantes this year. i went last year with conrad and it was one of the best nights of my life but i wasnt sure if i could do it this year. i would do it for shayla though. i spent the rest of the afternoon swimming laps in the pool while jere and belly were swimming in the ocean. i tried to get conrad out of my head but he was everywhere in this place. i then got ready for the evening at the beach in a tank, shorts, and zippie hoodie. i went to check with laurel and susannah if it was ok if belly came with me to the beach tonight and i'd take care of her with the help of the boys. they reluctantly agreed with it being girls' movie night but i convinced them and told belly. she thanked me over and over and we hugged. taylor had left her an outfit which was very not belly but she was growing up and i had to deal with it. the 5 fisher and conklin kids loaded into the red jeep and drove down to the beach. i let belly have her freedom and went to find shayla. she saw me and absolutely lit up. she ran over to me and we both collided into a hug.
