Pestilence, it was a deadly virus spread by birds. 97 procent of the survivors died because of the virus.

Me and my brother were the only one left standing of our family. We were looking around for supplies in an abandoned village near our house. It was a three hour walk from our house to the village so I wouldn't say near but it was the closest village. We haven't seen people for a long time. I hope that there are still people because I'm starting to get annoyed by being alone with Roy.

"I found a shotgun" Roy yelled from upstairs. I was downstairs and looked around the kitchen, hoping to find some canned food. "Did you also find some ammo for the shotgun?"
"No, not yet"
"Great" I mumbled to myself.
I opened the last cabin in the kitchen. Yes! Canned tomato soup. Never been so happy in my life for tomato soup. I heard Roy's boots stomp on the stairs.
I walked over to the living room where Roy was looking out of the window.
"We should go. The sun is about to set" Roy said.
"Wait. I still have to check the garage"
I rushed to the garage and started searching.
I saw a cupboard with a lock on it. I looked around. My eyes scanned the place.
I saw an axe laying on the ground. I picked up the axe and swung it to the lock. First time missed. It did leave a little dent in the cupboard. I tried again and it hit the lock, but the lock hasn't broken yet. I tried once again with more force. The lock fell to the ground. I dropped the axe. I opened the cupboard and saw ammo for the shotgun, car oil, a few screwdrivers and tape. I took the shotgun ammo and tape. "Roy I found some ammo for the shotgun!" I yelled across the house. I didn't get a response. "Roy?" I yelled again. No response.

I walked back to the living room. Roy was looking out the window with his eyes wide open. "Holy shit! It's them!" He said excited and ran out the house. I ran after him. "Roy! What's going on?" I yelled. What is this dumbass doing? Then I saw him standing by two people. It were Tom and Denise! "Denise! Tom!" I said and they turned to me and Roy. I saw Denises face light up. I took a few steps forward and hugged Denise. She hugged me back tightly. "I- I can't believe it. You're alive" Denise said and released the hug.

"I missed you!" I said. I looked to Tom and Roy for a second and noticed that they weren't with their father and mother. "Where are Sylvia and Daniel?" I asked. Denise dropped her smile. "They died because of the virus"
"Oh i'm sorry"
"It's not your fault"
"What virus are you talking about?" Roy asked joining the conversation.
Tom and Denise looked at each other.
"You haven't heard of the virus?" Tom asked.
"We haven't seen people for a really long time" I said.
"There's this deadly virus spread by birds. You're lucky that you haven't crossed it. That was the third wave" Tom explained.
"Do you guys already know what the fourth wave is?" Roy asked
"Not yet. We actually plan to go back to the city some day now, to find out" Tom said.
"The military is engaged and is trying to help as many people in the city" Denise said.

I looked to the sky and saw the sun was setting. "Shit guys we need to go home" I said. "The sun is setting, you're right" Tom said. I know that's why I'm saying it.
"Can we go with you to your home?" Denise asked.
"Of course" I said.
"Okay let's go" Roy said and we started walking.

Denise walked next to me.
"Ivy"
"Yea?"
"Thank you for letting us stay. We've been walking for I don't know how long and haven't eaten in days"
"Of course Denise. You and Tom are our family. I think it's smart to stay together. We can go to the city with the four of us"
Denise smiled.
"I really missed this" she said.

The Roberts and the Jones always went on family holidays together. Denise Roberts, Tom Roberts, Sylvia Roberts and Daniel Roberts. We always went to the same place. We went to Spain for a whole month with the Roberts every June. The kids or the teens had a separated table. After dinner we always went for a midnight swim. Me, Roy, Denise and Tom would splash around for hours. That we're my golden childhood memory's.
