"What was that?" Gally asked, eyeing me as I sat down in front of him. He must've overheard my little outburst. I noticed there was already a plate of food in front of me.
"Nothing. Who's plate is this?" I point at the food, pushing it away from me. I'd rather not talk to the most sexist boy I know about what it's like being the only girl in the Glade.
Gally nodded his head several tables down, "Minho got you dinner. Said something about you likin' your mash fresh or something. I don't know." I lowered my head, smiling that he remembered our conversation from a few nights ago. I didn't think he was listening to me, seeing as he had his eyes closed the whole time I was talking.
I turned in my seat to look at the table Gally was gesturing at. Ben and Adam sat by each other, peering up at another boy whose back was facing us. His hands rested on his hips, one knee resting on the bench and the other leg keeping him in a standing position. The Runner turned around and joined our table, sitting beside me with a plate in his hands.
"Where's the Greenie?" Minho perked up as soon as he got comfortable. Gally and I side-eyed each other, neither of us knowing what he was talking about. I couldn't help but notice the feeling of his leg brushing against mine. Why was I taking note of all these little things?
"Greenie? D'you mean Vaness-"
"No one's come up the Box today?" Minho interrupted, furrowing his eyebrows.
I tilted my head, "No...? Did your silly calendar say that was today?" I teased him, poking his shoulder.
"Yeah, actually. We should've gotten another-"
Minho's sarcasm was interrupted by a loud alarm booming across the Glade. I shot my head up, searching for the source of the noise. Minho only nodded, whispering to himself. Gally shot up from his seat, running toward the Box. Minho got up as well, pulling my arm and breaking into a run. Several other boys ran in the same direction, stopping behind Gally, who was already hovering over the Box.
We all stood around, waiting for something to happen. I assumed this was the Greenie Alarm that Newt had told me about. I found Minho's sleeve and began fidgeting with it, excited to see who would be the new addition to the Glade. I broke the all-boy pattern, so the odds of another girl coming up couldn't be that slim.
I can't imagine another girl around here. That would be the best thing that could happen.
"Move, ya dumb shanks!" Newt hollered, pushing his way through the newly formed crowd of boys. They stepped aside as Newt and Alby came rushing by Gally's side. Alby and Gally grabbed the handles of the metal trapdoors, lifting them up.
Newt hopped down, disappearing into the Box. Alby lowered a lantern so it wasn't completely dark in there. Being this close to the Box gave me goosebumps. It's not fun waking up in pure darkness, with no memory of who you are.
