The next morning, Carrie woke up, took a shower, ate breakfast, and went downstairs to go to her first class until she bumped into her bandmates practicing. They felt so bad for her until a girl from her section named Virca ran over to where she was, and talked with her.
Virca: hey, how's your ankle?
Carrie: it's doing fine!
Virca: it sucks that you can't march on the field with us. We have a special slingshot marching routine. Everyone loves that move.
Carrie: who says that I can't? I can! The show must go on. I'mma still perform with you all. After I complete this few classes, I'm going to talk with Dr. Nall, and I hope he will find a way for me to still perform my solos and duets. You may have to get Harley to do the slingshot routine with you.
Virca: I got you! Anything for you! Besides, they moved Saturday's game until the next 2 weeks due to the opposing team. You know...the Blue University dolphins...their team have to quarantine because one of the players are sick.
Carrie: Wow! That's horrible 😢 I was looking forward to that game. Anyways, should I talk with Dr. Nall?
Virca: yes! He's in his office, planning out the music for our next competition in the next few weeks after we play the dolphins and if we beat the team, we will go to the playoffs. Isn't that exciting?
Carrie: YES! I never been to the playoffs before!
Virca: well, you are lucky!
In Dr. Nall's office, Dr. Nall has a pile of crumbled up paper balls of field routines, songs, etc. He almost had a mental breakdown until Carrie and Virca came in.
Carrie: umm...Dr. Nall?
Dr. Nall: oh hi, Carrie! Should you be resting your foot?
Carrie: yes! Let's go out here and sit down. Me and Virca needs to talk to you about something.
Dr. Nall: sure and thank you! You saved me from having a mental breakdown.
Carrie: why you're almost going to have a mental breakdown?
Dr. Nall: it's these field shows, songs, and stuff for the playoff game and competition.
Carrie: hey...don't stress yourself! Try taking a break. *pulls a chair for Dr. Nall*
Virca, Carrie, and Dr. Nall sat down to talk.
Dr. Nall: so what you two need to talk about?
Carrie: *sighs* Well...I wish I could perform in the halftime show with you all.
Dr. Nall: I tried telling you several times, that ankle got to heal. You can't just force yourself.
Carrie: I'm not going to actually march. I want to have a special moment when I can just sit down and play the halftime show. Just give me one chance.
Dr. Nall: who's going to do the slingshot routine?
Virca: *raises her hand* I will! Along with Georgie.
Carrie: *smiles*
Dr. Nall: Carrie?
Carrie: yes?
Dr. Nall: I see what you mean. See that layered board over there?
Carrie: *looks in the corner* yeah?
Dr. Nall: would it be okay if I can close it off with some bars and build a chair on top of it? That way, you can sit down as you play.
Carrie: YES! YES! I WOULD LOVE THAT!
Dr. Nall: great! What's your favorite color?
Carrie: my signature colors are sky blue & pastel pink
Dr. Nall: keep on a lookout for those emails or the sound my voice.
Carrie: thank you! I will! *gets up and looks back* so when you're going to have it ready?
Dr. Nall: at the next practice, we're on break right now for a few days. See you next Wednesday?
Carrie: yes! Thank you! *looks back at Dr. Nall* I will never forget that a good friend told me, "the show must go on".
Dr. Nall: *smiles* you're right about that! See you next week, Carrie!
Carrie: okay, we'll see you!
