The Saturday was perfect. Except for the growing bruise on his side from his dad the day before, because he wasn't able to get everything done before he got home. "Oo I remember there was this nice ice cream place close by." Pete said as his dark eyes beamed at Nick. If Nick wasn't careful he might get lost in them. "Oh really? Nice in flavor or nice in good dining?" Nick said snickering a little. Pete smiled and gave a little chuckle too. "Nice in both ways." Pete nudged Nick arm. It hurt a little but Nick wasn't paying attention to it. It felt nice hanging out with Pete all day. He wouldn't know what would of happened to him if Pete never showed any interest of being his friend. Their bike rides together were always so calming, even though they sometimes joke a little to hard and almost make each other fall off, but they were having fun and never held any grudges.

The ice cream parlor was very lively. Many people sat in their cars outside in groups of 4 or more and the inside wasn't to bad. The red and white checkered floors, what was it with checkered floors, they seem to be everywhere, the velvet red booths on each side of the wall, and a few standard tables in the middle. Nick and Pete walked side by side and went up to order their ice cream. They decided to sit at a booth on the left side by the window to see the setting sun. Pete's skin practically glowed in the orange light which made Nick look at him in awe. Pete must of noticed because his cheeks got a little pink and asked, "what is something on my face?" He started to wipe his face. Nick looked away quick as his face started to burn up, "what n-no I was just looking at.. something behind you."
Pete looked at him confused and turned a little but quickly turned back.

After a lot of laughs and chowing down on their ice cream, a Sunday for both of them to share because money was tight, Pete suddenly got all shy.
"Hey what's wrong?" Nick asked worried for his friend.
"Oh nothing.. I just.." Pete's face got a little red, was he blushing or was the grey hoodie he always wore getting to be to much? "I just wanted to ask you something." Pete finally spit out what he was trying to say still not looking at Nick.
Nick felt a little sick. Every-time someone wanted to ask him a question he was always scared it would be about his home life. "Um.. what is it." Nick said trying to sound like he wasn't afraid.
Pete's dark brown eyes landed on Nick's pitch black eyes and Nick felt his face heat up. "I was wondering um... if you.. wanted to.." Pete started but then looked away, "wait let's go somewhere more private."
Nick was confused but then he looked around to see people looking at them. He didn't understand why they looked at them like they were disgusted.

They finished the last pieces of their Sunday and started to walk out together. Pete's face was still as red even though it was comfortable weather outside. Pete suggested they go to the park which they did. The setting sun was sinking in the distance making it almost night fall.
The park was empty and very old. The rusting swings and monkey bars looked worse than Nick's bike. They set their bikes down on a near by oak tree and sat on the swings. The squeaking of the rusty swing set was making the place feel creepy but at least Nick wasn't alone.
"So what did you want to say? It sounds like it's important." Nick said so he could get to the point.
Pete's eyes were down at his black shoes not saying anything for a second but finally finds his words, "Nick.. how do you feel about.. two.." he was covering his face now but it was obvious he was blushing this time and mumbled something Nick couldn't understand. "Huh? I didn't catch that last part." Nick said still just as confused.
Pete looked even more embarrassed but repeated himself, "how do you feel about two guys dating?" Pete's eyes looked watery like he might cry but they look so calming. Nick stared at him for a second. He hoped that the burning in his cheeks weren't showing, "Well.. honestly it doesn't bug me? What are you trying to say?"
They both stared at each other with red faces then both turned away as if they read each other's minds.
Pete finally broke the silence, "I-I was just wondering.. maybe.."
Nick turned at him trying not to get his hopes up for what Pete will say next.
"Maybe we could, you know.. date."
Nick knew he was blushing he felt it all over his face and his heart felt like it would beat out of his chest. It took him awhile to find his voice. "I-I.. are you playing with me-" Nick started but Pete quickly jumped in, "No no I'm not.. I'm being as serious as I'll ever be!"
Nick looked down at the wood chips on the playground and covered his face with his hands. "You really want to date.. me?" Nicks voice quivered like he was about to cry. Pete could tell how his best friend felt and put a hand on Nick's shoulder. "Of course I do.. um.. but it's ok we don't have too-" Nick jumped up, "No no- wait I ... I want to date you too!" Nick could finally tell why all the weird fuzzy feelings he had only came around when Pete was there. Nick loved him more than any girl he's talked to. The two of them looked at one another, at first they both looked shocked but now they just look at each other in awe.

They biked back home and they shared a last chuckle and turned on their opposite streets. For once in his life Nick finally thought about continuing on. He wanted to live for Pete and only Pete. He knew someone actually loved him more than his absent mom and abusive dad ever did. He was happy and it only made him happier seeing Fritz's have their lights on. "One day" he said riding off into the distance.
