2:32 a.m.
One hand over your mouth, the other gripping your chest, you tried to calm yourself down. It was about 2:30 in the morning and you just wanted to sleep. Squeezing your eyes shut, tears slowly rolled to the sides of your face, staining your pillow. You hadn't gotten any sleep for the past couple of weeks, and no matter how hard you tried you couldn't get used to the feeling of sleeping alone.
The amount of tears hitting your pillow started to make it uncomfortable to lay on, so you lifted up slightly and turned the pillow over. Sighing, you plopped back down, now on your side and curled up into a ball. Your room was basically pitch black, the way you hated it, so when your phone lit up it almost immediately caught your attention. Leaning over towards your phone, where it rested on your nightstand, you pick it up and squint at the bright screen as you look through the notifications. The only thing on the screen, other than Twitter notifications, was a message from about a hour ago. It was from one of your best friends, you've known him for years. It simply read "I'm omw over". Earlier that day, you told him you weren't feeling well so you couldn't go out with him. But that's been your excuse for the past 5 days now, and he's obviously suspicious. You decided not to text him back, hoping he would think you were asleep and would change his mind. Laying your phone under your pillow, you sigh and listen to the sound of the drizzle hitting your window. You sniffle and shut your eyes, hoping you'd finally be able to get some sleep.
3:45 a.m.
Biting your lip, you try to keep in your sobs. You felt pathetic. Not being able to fall asleep because of missing someone was a terrible feeling. You didn't deserve to be up crying at almost 4 in the morning while he's probably somewhere getting the best sleep of his life. Hugging the covers to your chest, you sigh a shaky sigh, frustrated with yourself. Just then you hear something, not sure what it is, you ignore it. But when you hear your bedroom door open your heart begins to race. Your back was to the door so you couldn't see who it was.
"You should really stop leaving that spare key under your doormat." You relax at the sound of your friend's voice, but you quickly become annoyed at the fact that he showed up even after you didn't reply to him. You close your eyes and keep still, trying convince him that you're sleep...again. He closes the door, and walks towards you. "You really expect me to believe you're sleep? After not being able to all week, nice try" he says with a hushed laugh. You groan remembering you've been telling him you haven't been sleeping. Without moving from your comfortable spot, you you turn to look at him. "I could've just been dead you know..." You say quietly. Since you'd been laying in the dark for so long, your eyes were adjusted so you could see him easily. "Maybe that's why I came over, to make sure you weren't" he says in a joking tone as he takes his shoes off.
He reached up and removed his beanie, revealing his messy hair. After placing it on your bed, he lifted his, what seemed to be flannel, over his head and laid it on the end of the bed too. "...it's raining outside" he says. You sigh, "I heard" you say referring to the rain hitting your window harder than before. "...Why are you here, do you know how late it is" you say trying to sound as tired as possible. "I wanted to make sure you were okay..." He said in a more serious tone. "I'm fine, please put your clothes back on" you say pulling the covers up towards you to hide your tear stained face. "Or I could just get naked." You rolled your eyes, not in the mood for his jokes.
After not replying to his joke, he shuffles over to the opposite side of your bed. "...well...I'm not going back out into that mess..." He says as lifts up the covers and gets into bed with you. "Shouldn't have came at all" you say in a low tone. "Why are you being so mean" he says throwing his arms around you lazily and pulling you towards him so that you were spooning. "...I'm not...I just..." You attempt to finish your thought, but the words get caught in the heavy lump in your throat. You close your eyes as tears threaten to spill again. Your heart starts to race again in fear that he'd notice. Your body starts to jerk slightly from trying to keep yourself from crying, but you just decide to let it all go, it was no use in trying to hide it.
"Don't cry...please" he says hugging you closer to his body. "I'm sorry..." You say barely audible. You turn over so that you're facing him and you lay your head on his warm chest as you continue to cry. He sighs, rewrapping his arms around you as you get comfortable. "I know you miss him..." He says in almost a whisper, "just...don't cry, okay?" He rests his head on top of yours, trying to comfort you, stroking your back with his fingers. His touch eventually calms you down, and before you know it you're both drifting off into a much needed sleep without another word.
