______________________________________We got to the field in front of the administrative building where most of the students were assembled according to their classes. Their noises were so loud that the teachers had to coordinate them.
I and Kerry joined the few S.S.S.3 students that were already assembled on the field and went to the front since we were obviously the shortest.
I saw the principal, the registrar and the school counselor at the front, each seated on a chair under the shade of a tree waiting patiently for all students to be present.
The scorching afternoon sun made me squint my eyes as it shone brightly on the field making most students to mumble in discontent. I hid my eyes from the sharp ray of sunlight with my left hand.
"Aaargh! Why don't we just use the school hall na, this heat is getting too much oo" A familiar female voice from the back complained, voicing out my own thought.
I looked back and saw the owner of the voice...
"Ewatomi!!!" I beamed and waved happily at her. I've not seen her since this term began.
"Awwwn, Funmi how are you???"
"I'm fine oo, see as you just dey fresh anyhow"
"Fresh keh?"
"Ehen naw..."
"This hot sun will soon spoil fresh face for me o", she complained, caressing her cheek and making a sad pout while I chuckled.
The S.S.S.3 boys joined us on the field, most of them sweating like typical Christmas goats about to be killed.
Do goats even sweat?? I don't even know, sha let's leave it laidat.
Ebunoluwa was behind them, still ringing the bell. She continued ringing till all the students were present on the assembly field. She went to the front where the principal, registrar and counselor were comfortably seated like Kings and Queens while we the students and even teachers sef are under hot sun, arrant nonsense!
She bowed her head to greet them. She conversed a little with them and gave the principal the bell before leaving their presence to join us on the line.
The school management came forward to address us. The principal cleared his throat to speak when my stupid classmates found it as the right time to interrupt and make noise.
"So, why are you guys sweating like this na, wetin do you?" Adebimpe asked mockingly, facing the boys on their row.
"Ah! Babe you can't understand, we had a match today and it was meddd" Taiwo, one of the S.S.S 3B students replied in a loud tone, not caring if the school management is present on the assembly, as he cleaned the beads of sweat on his face with a black face towel.
"Ehn ehn, so which classes played?" Ayomide chipped in.
"S.S.S 3 boys vs S.S.S 4 boys" Taiwo answered again, flashing his teeth.
"Dem just dey finish their WAEC, dey con talk say make dem play ball with us because ee don tay wey the two classes played together, na so we con destroy them patapata" Richard said while the rest burst into laughter.
"You people should shut up na, don't you know that we're on the assembly ground" Pearl snapped.
"Abeg shut up jare" Richard snapped back.
