Step into my cavern... said the fey to the dragon. And yet, the great weakness the dragon has to a fey's magic grants the need to adapt. The dragon overcomes the fey in the end, just as the sun does to the moon. Although friends in the past, they are enemies now.

LIFE DIDN'T HAVE TO get more complicated than this

LIFE DIDN'T HAVE TO get more complicated than this. But it did anyway, and Mars deemed the following events as the worst ever things to happen.

1) She didn't get accepted into the Advanced Tech Program at a nearby university, which had high school students explore their career paths in technological advancement. Like, come on! Mars knew they wouldn't be accepted into every program, but, crap, she wanted this. She didn't want to be reduced to rubble in this sad town.

2) Their mom couldn't come home for Thanksgiving and Christmas. She was stuck doing nursing work in Saudi Arabia. She hadn't been home in two years! If anything, Mars, her sisters, and her dad had to fly over to Saudi to even give her a kiss on the cheek. Mrs. Gloria Padilla-Khurana had been busy with her medicinal work, as always, but it never got this bad until she was promoted. And the family had been planning for her to be back in California for ages, goddamnit!

3) Jim Lake Jr. and Toby Domzalski — their neighborhood friends since childhood — dragged her into problems she never expected them to face. And these problems related to secrets she thought she'd keep to herself for life, yet they were forced to reveal that she knew more about Arcadia Oaks than what others thought.

There was a reason why her father insisted on immigrating to Arcadia Oaks, not San Francisco or Los Angeles or even Napa, California. No, they had to be in Arcadia Oaks. Nowhere else. Ardaman Khurana had a job to do, and that job was to oversee the local evil underground waiting to grow. Whatever that meant.
