"Er, wha- bu- And?"
Rekay turned to face me now. "What do you mean 'and'? That's it. You're the heir. Destined to have the greatest power of the age. That's a major power and a major responsibility. With power such as this, great control must be held, and precautions must be taken.""What could go wrong?"
That was the wrong thing to say."What could go wrong? Ha! What could go wrong she says! You don't know what you're saying! People have died trying to possess such a power. And now it's just handed to you and you think nothing can go wrong." She took a deep breath and continued, "There will be people who want to use you for your power. There will be people who will betray you for a chance at your power. There are people who would kill for the power of the heir. That's why you need me. I've been training to protect the heir since ninth grade. I can help you."
Mistress Pevill spoke now, "Now we can't know for sure yet. But, for now I suggest we prepare for the worst."
"What's--"
"Tomorrow, report here for third hour."
"But--"
"For now you're excused, go read this book."She plopped a small leather-bound book onto the dresser I was leaning on. I glanced at the cover and saw a strange, somewhat familiar symbol.
"What--"
"Bub. You're dismissed. Go read.I spent the rest of the hour in my dorm studying the private Book of Cetrana the Great.

I went to bed exhausted from all that had happened. Even though it was only eight, it felt like midnight. It was pitch black outside and that didn't help me stay awake.
I better sleep... Tomorrow is probably going to be the same...I curled up underneath my pink and purple comforter and closed my eyes even though all the lights were still on in the room I shared with three other people who weren't even back yet.
I was on the verge of sleep when the frantic sophomores came into the room. Still dressed in their day-clothes, they sat on the bed opposite of mine. Robin spoke first. "Do you really think they could take her?"
Craina replied hesitantly, "I think they're gonna try."
"We're going to have to prepare for the worse anyway, we can't let anything happen to it. Or her." Rekay responded."What are you talking about?" I hauled myself up to look at them.
Robin started, "Well, um, as your advisors, we're supposed to make sure you get to all your classes and understand the assignments and all that. But above all we are supposed to keep you out of trouble. And the Desarè have somehow sensed your power awakening and they too, believe you to be the heir of Cetrana."
"Oh great..." I said sarcastically.
Another thing to worry about."We have reason to believe that they are coming after you. And they have a secret weapon." Craina said. "Who?" I asked. "We don't know."
Rekay stepped in. "It could be anyone. We never know who's on our side." Then Robin stated the most overused phrase of the twentieth century with a sudden whole new meaning, "Trust no one."
"So what do we know?"
"The Desarè are a group of ryles that want power. They think that boranges are useless and need to be governed by a 'greater being'. But the Triqi, ryle authorities, have more power and people so they can't start a war. But now they're after something greater, the Lapis Key."
"Where is it?" I pleaded.
Craina stepped in, "Right now there is a forgery on display in London, but the real one's location is unknown. The Triqi claimed to find it so the Desarè would stop looking and just try to take the fake. But the time on that is limited. They've already tried twice, and once they know..."
"We'll have to come up with something else." Robin completed her sentence, but it may not have turned out to be what was originally intended.
There was silence for a few moments before Rekay directly addressed me and told me to report to the sixth tower instead of English first hour tomorrow. "What's in the sixth tower?"
"Kristenda Class. Good night."
I hadn't even noticed that all of us had migrated back to our own beds.
"Okay, good night."A/N
