Mia feels the vaguest amount of guilt for lying.
Ethan didn't deserve to be lied to, but it wasn't exactly like she could tell him she was off to do illegal experimentation on genetically altered children and go on her merry way. Instead, she lied and left, unable to even look at him for much longer than necessary.
(It's the guilt she tells herself, not the way she cringes for a moment when he kisses her or how reluctant she is to be intimate with him, or the way she catches herself staring at other women.)
She looks around at her new home, forcing the thought of her significant other away, she begins to set up her station. She wanders for a while, learning the lay of the area, finding her way to each important and pertinent place.
That's when she sees the blonde.
...she doesn't look particularly pleased, and it only gets worse when she catches sight of Mia lurking. She's in her face before Mia can even apologize or say anything.
"What are you doing here?" the woman practically hisses.
Before Mia can answer or defend herself the woman tenses as if silently called away, before storming away.
The truth of it all is it honestly could've been worse.

And it absolutely does get worse.
Mia meets Eveline who's an angel half the time and the reincarnate of the devil the other, and also gets properly introduced to the blonde.
"This is Dr. Miranda...... what the hell ? Goddamit, that secretary blurred your name again, how does that keep happening...."
Miranda gives the man introducing her a look, effectively scaring him away before zeroing in on Mia. She shows no recognition of their previous encounter.
"Don't get in the way."
Well isn't she fun?
Mia's sorely tempted to start a fight, but it's her first day on the job, and pissing off the head scientist doesn't seem like a great option. So she keeps her mouth shut, but doesn't give her the satisfaction of a 'yes ma'am'.
Miranda doesn't twitch, doesn't move, and it freaks Mia out.
"Yes ma'am"
A smug look crosses her face before she swivels and returns to her notes. Mia internally kicks herself for allowing herself to be pressured but moves on. Eveline wraps her arms around Mia's legs and looks up at her.
"Are you gonna be my new mommy?"
Mia blinks in surprise.
"I didn't mean to hurt the old one." she adds.
Mia worries what that means, and that's when Miranda chooses to return and take Eveline away for testing. Mia takes a breather and re-evaluates her field.
Her phone buzzes and when she checks it, she finds that it's Ethan.
The truth of it all is, she would rather talk to Miranda for longer than thirty seconds than talk to Ethan right now.
___________________________
It takes Mia three days before she picks a fight with Miranda.
She doesn't have that much self-control.
Miranda looks wildly irritated by this, but Mia won't back down. Eveline needs a break, that's what she tells herself, and it's not at all because Mia wants to piss Miranda off.
