Mia immediately self-destructs.

(She's very good at that by the way, if you're curious)

She becomes so horrifyingly awkward around the blonde that she feels as if their roles are reversed with Miranda helps her through the conversation with a perplexed expression. Mia smiles at her with obvious anxiety before going over to Eveline and distracting herself.

Although the confused puppy expression that briefly flashes across Miranda's face before she regains control is probably the best thing Mia's ever seen.

This goes on for a solid amount of time until Miranda gives up and storms over to Mia.

"I don't know if this is some sort of new thing that humans do that I don't know about, but what is wrong?"

"...did you just say, humans?" Mia's struggling to not laugh at Miranda's embarrassed face, mixed with brief panic.

"...no."

"I'm pretty sure you did."

"Did not." Miranda is easily goaded into a childish argument of did too and did not for a solid three minutes until she realizes what Mia's done. She sends her a dirty look that makes Mia giggle and she struggles to stop a blush when pride flickers in Miranda's eyes at the sound.

Stop it - think of Ethan.

Mia doesn't want to think of Ethan.

The truth of it all is, Mia's never been a person of good moral character.

Mia doesn't know what they're doing anymore because there's a certain level of romantic intention that floats in the air when she's interacting. Eveline made a face when she watched Mia and Miranda interact like a pair of lovesick teenagers, both oblivious to each other's feelings and one not even in tune with her own emotions.

Adults are stupid is what Eveline mutters.

Mia's inclined to agree.

Especially when she and Miranda decide it's a five-star idea to stay up through the night going over paperwork (Mia's slowly become a helper to Miranda and maybe she does a few science projects, Miranda won't admit to anything). Mia starts to get hungry but decides to wait for Miranda to crave food as well.

And that's great in theory, but unbeknownst to Mia, Miranda doesn't need food and rarely eats it. So another hour goes by, Mia gets hungrier. Then another, and another, and before she knows it, it's two in the morning and Mia hasn't eaten.

Miranda's head jerks up, almost surprised.

"Have you eaten?"

"No, I've been waiting for you to eat, do you not eat when you do this, that is so not good for you." Mia muttered.

(She didn't see the twitch of her fingers, the desire to reach out for Mia and gently run her fingers through her hair, or the surprise at how she cared about her health.)

Miranda pursed her lips, which in itself was an answer to her question. Mia rolled her eyes and forced Miranda to stand.

"Come on, I'm going to introduce you to vending machine pop tarts."

"...what's the difference between them and normal pop tarts?"

"Guaranteed staleness."

And that really is the truth.

Once Mia deemed that they had enough snacks they trekked back to Miranda's office, almost cooing at the curious expression on Miranda's face.
