Ada

"Two minutes until we are live" a man behind the camera says to me.

You see, I'm a famous ballet dancer and YouTuber with a genetic respiratory disorder called cystic fibrosis - or CF. They all tell me it's remarkable that I am doing so well in such a challenging lifestyle. It's part of how I'm famous, really, it's not just my talent, but rather my talent in the circumstances.

But it's my life.

I'm from Edinburgh in Scotland, but I moved to New York when I was fourteen for a ballet course. Mum and Dad decided we would stay so I attended school in there, where I met Jennifer. She was my polar opposite but it never mattered, I had a friend.

I was being interviewed about my career and condition. I searched the live audience for my best friend. I spotted her almost instantly as she's hard to miss since she's centre front row. I smoothed down my navy lace shift dress and adjusted my rose quartz pendant necklace, making sure I looked alright for my TV appearance. I fiddled with my ribbon tie sandals as the interviewer settled himself in the seat opposite me.

"Live in three, two, one"

"Welcome back everyone, I am joined now by teen ballerina and YouTube sensation, Adelaide Watson! How are you Adelaide?"

"Please, call me Ada," I shake the interviewer's hand and push my dark brown hair out of my pale face, "and I'm great thank you David."

"So, your YouTube career is taking off then Ada?"

"Yes it is, my channel SimplyAdelaide hit 2 million subscribers last week" I nod and then laugh at the applause from the audience.

"That is incredible. And you do this alongside your ballet career?"

"Yes, I just finished a big job dancing as Odette in Swan Lake, so filming will be a lot easier; especially as my best friend Jennifer and I are moving to London where there are more people in the YouTube community."

Jenn grins at me from the audience.

"So are you taking a break from dancing while in London?"

"Maybe for a while but I may find work there. Who knows what will happen!" The audience laughs.

David grins at me, "I'm sure whatever it is you will do great. Now you suffer from cystic fibrosis, do you not?"

"I do," I nod.

"Do you feel that limits you more than other dancers?"

"I wouldn't say so, but I do have to take measures to maintain my health that other dancers won't have to, as they don't have CF. Dancing actually helps as physical exercise is beneficial."

"And what is CF, exactly?"

"It's a respiratory condition, caused by a genetic mutation, where my lungs and digestive system are basically clogged by mucus. About 1 in 2500 babies in the UK will have it. I was one in two thousand five hundred." I chuckle sadly.

"I see," he says, nodding, "you are one talented girl. So, how did your parents discover you had CF?"

"Well, when I was about 4 or so, back in Edinburgh, my Mum and Dad were worried about this cough that just wouldn't go away. So they took me to see our GP, who referred us to the hospital where they diagnosed me."

"That must have been hard for your parents," David remarks and I nod, "How do you maintain your health then?"

"I take a hell of a lot of tablets each day, I have frequent hospital appointments, I have to do breathing exercises and physiotherapy to help clear the mucus. If it gets very bad and I get very ill, I could need a lung transplant,"

"You poor girl, we are all very impressed by your positivity in such a difficult life." David says gravely, "So, your friend, Jennifer Haldane, isn't it, can you tell me about her?"

"Well," I say, grateful for the topic change, "she is a street dancer, she is fairly well known for videos of her dancing that have gone viral and the YouTube videos of mine that she has featured in. We met in high school and we just clicked, I guess. We've been friends ever since."

"Amazing," he turned to the camera, "well that is all we have have time for today, so a huge thank you to Ada and good luck in London. See you tomorrow folks" we wave at the camera until it is cut off.

We both stand up and shake hands.

"It was great to meet you" I say, smiling widely.

As usual, my smile is infectious so he beams back at me, "You too Ada. Thank you for coming on."

"Oh it's no bother, so is that me done here?"

"Yes I think so."

"Before I leave, do you mind saying hello to my viewers?" I hold up my vlogging camera I have hidden beside me.

"Film away" he smiles, so I turns the camera on myself and press play.

"So I have just finished my last press interview in New York before I move! Say hello David" I turn the camera to face him.

"Hello Ada's viewers! You should all be very proud of her" he waves.

"Awh you are too sweet," I step into view as well, "anyway, I will see you all in a bit" and with that I stop recording and switch it off.

"Well thank you, I must be heading now."

"Goodbye!" He waves as he walks off the stage area.

I wander towards Jenn.

"How was it?" I ask anxiously, "did I look okay? Did I say anything stupid?"

"You were amazing Ada, now come on, we have to finish packing before tomorrow. Or if you had forgotten, we are moving to London tomorrow!" She squeals excitedly.

"Ah, I can't believe it! Oh I also have to film a video tonight, so remind me once we are back?"

"Fine, only because I know you will forget otherwise." Jenn laughs as we leave, arm in arm.
