2.5 billion.
That's how many lightbulbs are sold each year.
With each bulb that flickers and dies, a new one is up and ready to replace it.
With each new light bulb illumining the earth, the night sky gets brighter.
It's quite a beautiful sight. Especially if you're in an airplane. Above the pitch black sky as you look down on hundreds of twinkling lights.
However, this beauty comes at a price; and quite a large one at that.
In exchange for all that controlled, cracking, electricity, the stars were taken from us. Most call it light pollution, I call it a tragedy.
Because this I have never seen more than 3 stars in the sky at a time, not in person anyways. Yes, you can see pictures of bright pinpricks called stars dotting the sky anywhere on the internet.
However I don't know a single person who has seen it with their own eyes.
Sometimes I imagine that the sky above me is filled with stars. Fiery balls of light that illuminate the night sky.
For now I'll have to settle for lightbulbs.
Our artificial stars in this artificial world.
