Hiccup knew that the Dragon Hunters were cold-hearted killers, but to lock children in a cage? It seemed dark, even for them. Even if these children were of the Lycanwing variety, it didn't change the fact that they were still children, small children who were quite frankly terrified.
The moon had apexed. The children had transformed into their respective dragon forms; all the evidence Johann had needed that Lycanwings were real. A little Night Terror boy sat cowering with his younger brother, a Terrible Terror. A Fireworm girl was banging on the walls of the dragon-proof cage, hissing at Krogan and trying to shoot him with her fire blasts while the eldest, a Smokebreath girl, was trying to hold her back.
"They'd fetch a fine price on the market," Johann monologued as Hiccup, Toothless, Heather and Windshear attempted to free the children from their prison that sat atop the sea stack. The rest of the Riders were in the air fighting Krogan's Flyers. Krogan and Viggo themselves were guarding the cage from a distance, though neither looked particularly interested in keeping the children contained. Viggo's face appeared completely emotionless, a stark contrast to the signature smirk he usually wore. Not once did he look at the children. Krogan's eyes were filled with pity, and perhaps a little shame. Perhaps, Hiccup thought, locking children in cages was a little too dark, even for them.
"I wonder what the price for a live Lycanwing would be versus a dead one," Johann pondered, "Perhaps they could be exterminated, ridding the Viking world of such a terrible disease and supplying us with their hides, it would be a win-win situation, would it not? One would be inclined to pay good money for a Lycanwing hide. Then, perhaps keeping them alive would be of use, we could use them to maintain the Lycanwing trade for years to come. I'd get them to infect you and your Rider's first, obviously. I can only imagine the price Viggo would pay for a Hiccup-Night Fury hide."
One would only notice if they were looking for it, but Viggo's eyes had hardened over in hatred.
"You'll be doing nothing of the sort," Hiccup snapped.
"Tell me, Hiccup, how do you expect to free those abominations with only a Night Fury and a Razorwhip?" Johann smirked.
Suddenly there was a bright flash, a boom, and then the battlefield was enveloped in a harsh blue fog. Hiccup felt himself unable to move, completely paralysed. Was this Flightmare mist? What was a Flightmare doing here? His racing thoughts were interrupted by five more loud blasts - a blast of enflamed kerosene gel, a bolt of lightning, a bright blue blast of fire, a jet of water and splatters of amber crashed to the ground in quick succession, creating quite the cacophony.
Hiccup shifted his gaze up to the closest adjacent sea stack where the blasts had come from, and was shocked to see the silhouettes of six strange figures standing atop it. The silhouettes looked almost human, but had dragon-like features, so Hiccup assumed they were also Lycanwings. He internally cringed. Now there were even more Lycanwings for Johann to capture.
The first Lycanwing leapt into the sky as a strange music began to reverberate through the air, and Hiccup didn't need moonlight to see what species she was - it was made clear by the glowing blue scales that grew up her arms and legs like sleeves. Her eyes shone brightly too, and her tendrilled wings matched the tassels that dangled from her skirt, from under which protruded a split tail. Even her hair, bound in a ponytail with a split reminiscent of a Flightmare's tail, glowed a bright blue. She darted across the sky then hovered above the scene of the atrocity, announcing herself in a theatrical manner while striking a pose. Hiccup would have laughed if he hadn't been paralysed.
"A glowing hope in the darkest night... Lycan Aurvandil!"
The second Lycanwing followed Aurvandil into the sky, and it took Hiccup a moment to work out what species she was. All was revealed when her crimson scales were lit ablaze, revealing scaley arms that ended in talons instead of hands and grew striped wing membrane as long as her legs. A long tail dangled from under her skirt, lashing about. Horns protruded from her head and her black hair blew wildly. Hiccup was amazed that neither her hair nor clothes seemed to burn.
"A passionate flame of velvet red... Lycan Stoker!"
The third Lycanwing darted forwards faster than Hiccup could register, riding a bolt of lightning. If her Skrill status wasn't obvious now, it was certainly made obvious by the black and purple scales that coated her skin and the spiny frills that protruded from her neck and upper back. Her arms ended in hook-like talons instead of hands just like Stoker's did, and grey wing membrane grew from her arms. The electric aura that surrounded her shorter form gave off the appearance of glowing, especially around her blonde hair which was bound in two twintails.
"A bursting strike of shocking light... Lycan Thunderstorm!"
The fourth Lycanwing joined them in the sky. She was clearly a Razorwhip - her bladelike wings were a dead giveaway. Her skin was so cluttered with silver scales that it almost looked like armour, and she shone spectacularly like she herself was a star. Her hair was a colour Hiccup had never seen before - platinum blonde - and was tied in a lengthy ponytail. She'd clearly put a lot of thought into her outfit, as it was decorated with more spikes than Hiccup could count. A spiny tail lashed about from under her skirt, flexing its spines menacingly.
"A razor-sharp blade shining like a star... Lycan Silver!"
The fifth Lycanwing launched into the air. She had no way of lighting herself up, so Aurvandil increased her glow a little so the true beauty of the Scauldron Lycanwing could be revealed. Shimmering sea-green scales coated her skin and tendrils dangled from her neck. The underside of her wings bore a beautiful green and blue pattern much like that of an alstroemeria. Her turquoise hair flowed behind her like a river.
"A burning blast of life-giving water... Lycan Oleander!"
The sixth and final Lycanwing joined her friends in the sky. Hiccup finally realised where the music was coming from - the butterfly-like pattern that bedazzled her gold and blue wings and the blue frills that decorated her golden scales and framed her twin-drills were a dead giveaway that she was a Death Song. Hiccup wondered how he hadn't realised earlier.
"A deathly sweet lullaby... Lycan Siren!"
Presently Hiccup found himself able to move again, and apparently so did everyone else.
"You were saying?" Hiccup taunted as Johann growled.
"The emissaries and defenders of the Lycanwing Tribe, we are the Lycanwing Six!" the Lycanwings declared.
"The Lycanwing Six?" Heather repeated, "I don't recall hearing any mentions of them before."
"Hey! Hey!" the Night Terror boy cried.
"Over here!" the Terrible Terror boy shouted, banging at the bars of the cage.
"The Lycanwing Six! They'll save us!" the Smokebreath girl cheered.
"They're heroes!" the Fireworm girl added.
"Are they, now?" Viggo asked in a gentle voice, leaning against the cage with a curious expression. It was the first time he'd spoken that night.
"I'd love to see what they can do," Krogan added.
The Six descended to the ground in a flurry of wings and scales, landing crouched together in the middle of the battlefield. Aurvandil was clearly the leader of the group, as she began to give out directions.
"Siren, you lure in those Singetails," she ordered, "Thunderstorm, Oleander, you two take out as many as you can as quickly as you can. Silver, break open that cage. Stoker, help me with the kids."
The beautiful music that emanated from Siren's vocal chords increased in volume and beauty. It appeared that the Singetails were drawn to it no matter what their Flyers did. Oleander sprayed a great jet of water into the air, scalding many of the Singetails and knocking them out of the sky. Thunderstorm was having great fun - it was her natural instinct, after all, to fight with the Singetails. With a cry of "Electric Flash!", she struck multiple opponents at a time, jolting them into unconsciousness. Siren didn't worry about trapping any of the dragons in amber; not only were they not consenting parties in the matter, but they could also just burn their way out and that would be a waste of good amber.
Silver gave the bars of the cage a harsh kick then spun on her heels. She cried out "Silver Stryke!" and sliced the entire cage in half with one strike of her tail. Aurvandil and Stoker leapt inside and gathered up the children, Stoker carrying them on her back and Aurvandil carrying them in her arms.
"Don't you dare try to stop us," Stoker threatened Krogan.
"Please, by all means," Krogan replied, holding his arms up in surrender.
"What are you two idiots doing? Don't let them take our prize!" they heard Johann shout. They watched as he attempted to lob a knife at Stoker, only to be imprisoned within a cocoon of amber.
"Oh, shut up!" Siren groaned.
"Yeah, shut up, Johann!" they heard Snotlout shout.
"I like you," Viggo said, pointing at Aurvandil.
"Everyone does, dear," Aurvandil sassed, giving him a flirtatious smile. Then she took off into the air, clutching the children close.
"Misty Dream!" she cried, then sprayed a billowing cloud of mist into the sky, freezing the last of the Singetails.
"You Riders had better get out of here before one of those Singetails regains its stamina and frees Jo-whatever from his cocoon," Oleander suggested.
"Y-Yeah," Hiccup nodded, slightly stunned.
"We might see you next month," Thunderstorm smiled.
"Let's hope not," Siren sighed, "No offense, of course, but I'd rather not have to meet anyone on the field of battle ever again."
"Bye-bye! Thanks for helping us!" the children cried.
The Six linked arms and disappeared in a flash, drawn away by Thunderstorm's lightning.
What followed was a bang, but not a thunderous bang. It was more comparable to the bang of Toothless knocking something over. Hiccup stirred and opened his eyes. Toothless had knocked his Maces and Talons board. Gods, he must have fallen asleep at his desk again. What sort of wild dream was that?
