Steve and Natasha had changed into regular everyday clothes, heading to the mall because the woman said it would be the safest place to see what was on the drive. They took her car, though it was one of the most obvious on the road, it was a bit more discreet than the two wanted SHIELD agents riding on Steve's motorcycle, which he had crashed.
They had ditched their phones at Natasha's apartment, not wanting any way for them to be tracked. So they decided to get a new phone, under a false name, to let Olivia know what was going on.
As they walked through the mall Natasha noticed Steve's quick pace and nervous alertness, the man checking his surroundings nonstop, "first rule of going on the run is don't run, walk," she told him, keeping her head and sight forward.
"If I run in these shoes they're gonna fall off," Steve said back.
"That's why I said walk," Natasha jested, opening the door for Steve to walk into the Apple store first.
Natasha walked up to a random sales associate, tall with long hair, "hi, can I just get the cheapest phone you have available?" she asked sweetly, "I totally lost mine the other day and I need a new one."
"Yes definitely," the man said, "I'll be right back with that for you," he told her, walking away to the back room to grab the phone.
She made her way over to a computer, typing away as Steve approached her from behind, "the drive has a level six homing program, so as soon as we boot it up SHIELD will know exactly where we are," she told Steve, the man looking around to make sure they were still safe.
"How much time will we have?" Steve asked.
"About nine minutes from," she paused to plug in the drive, "now," she continued typing, trying to get past the AI that was deflecting her, "Fury was right about that ship, somebody's trying to hide something," she said, "this drive is protected by some sort of AI, it keeps rewriting itself to counter my commands."
Steve leaned his hand against the table, watching her work, "can you override it?"
Natasha sighed, "the person who developed this is slightly smarter than me," she admitted, "slightly," she added for good measure, "I'm gonna try running a tracer. This is a program that SHIELD developed to track hostile malware, so, if we can't read the file maybe we can find out where it came from."
Steve honestly didn't understand a word of what she was saying, only that they can find it's place of origin. So he just watched her as she worked.
