I woke up to the sound of my bedroom door being pushed open, the squeak in the hinges made my eyes flicker open and my head slowly turn away from the noise. Closing my eyes again I heard a faint and soft voice, "Honey are you alright?" I responded with a groan and turned towards my mom, her brows were turned up slightly and the edge of her mouth formed a small frown. "I don't feel so good today ma." I croaked out, my throat felt dryer than the summer air and my mouth craving any sort of liquid. Slowly sitting up in bed I noticed how the sun was being blocked by my blinds, the little streaks of sun that did come through had tiny dust particles dancing before disappearing. As soon as I breathed in I felt the urge to cough tickle the back of my throat; with no hesitation I coughed. "Oh dear... I'll go make you tea and breakfast." My mom said before kissing my forehead and walking away. I glanced at the side of my pillow for my phone but couldn't find it, with some grunts and a sigh I pushed myself off my bed and onto the cold wooden floor, I put my head down and scanned the bottom of my bed. I noticed a small shoe box with a red string tied around it like a present, I froze for a second before reaching under and pulling the box out. Leaning back and sitting with my legs criss-crossed I gently ran my hands over the box, it was painted with flowers and buildings and the paint was cracking into dust. I untied the red string and lifted the top off, gently setting it on the floor next to me I saw the box contained the following: around 30 hospital bracelets, a 20-sided die, and a picture of me standing on a cliff overlooking the ocean. I carefully picked up the Polaroid photo and noticed how the edges were torn and burnt. As soon as I placed the picture back down I heard the tea kettle downstairs whistling softly, I took the top of the box and put it back on, tying the string and scooting it back under my bed. I stumbled trying to stand up, having to grip onto the side of my bed and pull myself up fully. The sound of my all-to-familiar squeaky door filled the houses hallway, I turned and shuffled my way to the bathroom just down from my room. Old pictures lined the old flower wallpaper; older men and women sitting in front of kids and young adults, kids playing with Akita dogs and family trees with faces burnt and only names showing. I turned into the bathroom and closed the door not bothering to turn the light on. The bathroom was well lit with a window resting above the shower, I looked into the mirror with a strange crust coated in some random spots and noticed how dead I looked. My eyes were half-closed and eye bags had began to form, my skin had a paler tint to it and my lips were cracked. I rested my hands on the counter and leaned my weight into them, I began to zone out.
~~~
The hospital lights were bright as I felt the wheels on the stretcher raced over tiny cracks in the tile, the sound of my breathing in a tube filled my ears and drowned out the shouting. I woke up in a room with a single vase of flowers at the foot of my bed. I couldn't see much else with the bandages wrapped around my head, I couldn't even feel my arms or legs.
~~~
I glanced down from my face to my neck, a huge scar with discolored skin stretched down from the side of my neck and wrapped around my collarbones and extended further down. My hand glided through my messy hair and smoothed it back as I straightened my posture. Walking back through the hallway I went past my room and down the narrow staircase to the main floor of the house, my steps were uneven and my legs wobbled with every step. The main floor smelled like eggs and bacon, the aroma danced around and made my stomach growl. I walked over to the small dining room table and took a seat, the windows had vines growing around them but it didn't block any light from entering. "Here honey, I hope you start to feel better soon." I smiled and began eating the eggs, the yolks broke and added more flavor in my mouth.
~~~
I stood at the end of two long rails, my arms the only support my body had. "Whenever you're ready." I heard the nurse say, I took a deep breath and slid my right leg forward, my knuckles turned white as I held on. Trying to take the next step I felt my arms buckle and I fell, I crumpled on the floor and felt hot tears flood out of my eyes.
"Thanks for breakfast, mom." I mumbled, she turned to me and smiled, "Do you think I could come with you into town?" I turned my head to look at her, "I'm already feeling a lot better and maybe a walk will help with whatever is going on. Plus I need to enjoy my summer yeah?" I tried my best to sound more cheerful then I actually was, "Okay... but stay near me, alright?" She said giving in, her voice was stern near the end but I could tell she was just being protective.
