I stood outside of the house waiting for my mom to come out, as I watched the house I noticed how it's cottage build was slowly being engulfed in the wild forest behind it. Vines curled around its sound structure and bushes created a hidden feel to it, the trees also seemed to loom over the small cottage. Suddenly the front door opened, my mom walked forward and beckoned me to follow her. My feet seemed to go into auto-pilot as I followed her, we followed a small path through the woods that seemed to stretch forever. Just before I was going to ask how much longer it would take we walked out of the dense woods and into a huge opening, flowers were spread all throughout the meadow and a decent sized town was set in the distance in front of us. I kept walking and looked around with awe, the scene was just too beautiful, I decided to glance at the way we came from and saw that we walked through a cove in the mountains. "We're almost in town make sure you are aware of your surroundings." My mom said sternly, she looked at me as I nodded.

The town was bustling with energy, people in cars on their way to work and others just enjoying the beautiful day. I was caught up in looking around that I ended up bumping into someone, their shoulder stopped me abruptly before I turned to apologize, "Oh, I'm so sor-" I got cut off as a slightly raspy yet loud voice spoke, "Watch where you're going!" I felt my mouth curl down into a small frown and looked down, trying to avoid eye contact with the man. As I started walking away I heard a faint voice speak to the guy I just bumped into, "That wasn't really nice of you." I smirked hoping the guy felt a bit bad for yelling at me. My pace quickened so I could catch up to my mom who was pretty far ahead, I caught up to her just as she turned into a small house, I hesitated after noticing how run down it looked. It looked like it was made in the 1940s and only just hanging on by a thread; most of the exterior was torn off and vandalized with graffiti, windows were broken and boarded up, and an ominous feeling surrounded the entire house. My mom held the door open for me as I slowly walked up the steps to the door, every other floor board creaked and made me feel like I was about to fall through the floor. "Mom why are we in this place?" My voice cracked a bit, "I have to talk to the owner about something, you can look around but don't come up near the back okay?" I looked her in her eyes and contemplating everything before nodding slightly. She smiled and walked off to the back where I heard a squeak and then a door close and lock. I sighed and began to walk around, the house was filled with old wooden selves that were peeling, all the shelves were filled with trinkets and other exotic items. I looked at a small gold bowl that had swirls around its oval shape, it was filled with bracelets, rings, a small glass pirate bottle, and some grey pebbles. I continued walking through the aisles of shelves filled with cobwebs until I felt an urge to go to the back. A strange magnetic force seemed to pull me to the back, I felt my legs move almost on command and bring me all the way to where my mom disappeared to. I saw the door that was locked and heard muffled talking, I ended up ignoring it and looked around. After scanning the shelves on the walls I saw a small dark brown rectangular chest covered with a layer of dust, it's almost like the only item I saw in that moment was the chest. I slowly stepped forward and picked up it up. Hoping it wouldn't need a key to open I tried my best to pry it open, it successfully opened and the contents kind of disappointed me, laying in the felt-lined chest was a 10-sided dice. I picked it up and began shaking it in my hand, I let it go back in the chest and watched it land on the number nine. Closing the top of the small chest I stuffed it into a pocket of my pants, I walked over to an antique stool and sat on it. My fingers traced the outline of the pocket and I brought my knees up to my face, I heard thunder in the distance and perked back up. I went to check the weather on my phone but realized I never found it from this morning, I stood back up and looked out one of the windows that wasn't boarded up. As soon as I did that lighting began to strike all around the area, I stepped back and turned around towards the door at the back seeing it swing open and my mother speed walking over to me, "Get down-!" Just as she shouted that a blinding white light clouded my vision and a deafening explosion made me fall to the ground.
~~~
I stood up from the ground and rapidly started to blink, in front of me I saw my mom laying stomach first on the ground. I ran over to her and fell to my knees, "Mom?? Mom wake up! Come on don't play with me!!" I shook her shoulders as hard as I could but she wouldn't wake up. My lungs began to feel like they were burning and my eyes started tearing up, my throat tightened as I gasped for air. A rage of coughing fits erupted, looking around I noticed the back room behind the door was on fire, a woman came running out of it with her face in her elbow and her other hand gripping a backpack. She made a b-line towards the front door but before she could make it I grabbed her leg, "You have to help me, she won't wake up!" She shook her leg making my fingers lose their grip, I fell to the floor, coughing more as the fire began to spread. I ripped a piece of fabric off my shirt and tied it around my nose, hoping the cover would work for a few minutes I stood up and tried to pick my mom up. Her body was limp but she was still breathing; but barely. I supported her knees and back as I picked her up and slowly shuffled my way outside, I started coughing again and as soon as I walked out I fell down the stairs. Black smoke rose from the back of the house and I pulled both myself and my mother out to the sidewalk, just before I could shout for help a huge ice glacier flew into the side of the burning building. A teenage boy with blonde spikey came running over, he shouted back at someone just before getting to us, "Keep that fire under control Icyhot! The firefighters will be here soon!" I ripped off the cloth around my face and held onto my consciousness, the boy kneeled by us, "Is everything alright? Any injuries?" I nodded and looked over to my mom, he instantly went over to her and tried to wake her up.
~~~
Around 10 minutes passed until both firefighters and paramedics arrived, the clouds that formed seemingly out of nowhere began to release its rain, it started off small and light but turned into large droplets at a fast rate. I sat on the sidewalk while paramedics loaded my mom into the ambulance, I began to zone out wondering why this all happened. A firm grip on my shoulder snapped me out of my daze, "Everything is going to be alright." I looked up to see the blonde boy, his voice sounded familiar but it seemed different at the same time. One of the paramedics came over and ushered me into the vehicle, I hopped in and watched as we drove away to a hospital.
