For a young adult looking after his younger sister, life was never easy. That's why he taught her volleyball, so at least they'd have something to bond over in the empty silence at the dinner table.
Mom noticed the rift in the two, but she never knew how to make them bond otherwise. Their interests were too dissimilar, as if they were day and night. She always found it difficult raising the older sibling. She wished that lousy excuse of a husband had stayed just to give Haru a life where he could experience a father-son relationship - but things never worked out in someones favour without a price.
"Y/N, again."
"I've done this so many times, can we do this later? Mom's almost done dinner." The young girl protested, sitting down on the wooden porch in their backyard.
"I don't want you getting a stomach ache right after though. Only three more times, Y/N, I swear. Then we're done for today." He insisted. She complained but followed anyways. The two siblings were both still young, the eldest in his last year of high school whilst the younger latter just in her last year of elementary.
She knew her brother was gifted. She wanted to be just like him, but at what cost? The ever-so famous starting setter of Karasuno? The boy who got scouted at big league colleges for their sports programs? She wanted it all, the boy who had everything had seemed so perfect.
"Haru, Y/N! Come inside now, stop practicing volleyball and eat dinner."
...
"Haru! This isn't fun anymore!" Y/N yelled, whipping the volleyball right into the net. She crouched to the ground, putting her hands on the top of her head as she dug into her scalp. "I'm so sick of this!" Her forearms were turning purple from the bruises she got from sliding and receiving left and right.
Haru looked at the young girl, his eyes narrowing as she was a ball of stress. He forgets she's just a child. He forgets that she's only 13. "Okay... We can stop then." At this point in time, she hadn't become a starter at Kaito. Even she was a bench warmer once.
"I'm done! Volleyball... Volleyball isn't fun..." She stammered, her arms falling at her sides as she collapsed to the ground. The game she had played a few weeks ago had annihilated her perception of the sport. Her naive view had been broken into pieces. Haru's face scrunched up, not really sure how to even comfort her after this.
