IT WAS SOME POINT IN 1982 WHEN ANITA CARLISLE AND STEVE HARRINGTON FELL OUT.

Nobody but them knew why. They never shared, they never answered the questions that were asked - and there were definitely enough questions asked. They never paid attention to the whispers from their classmates when they passed people in hallways.

It was a shocking break for the school. The two had been best friends since before they could walk, and were the troublesome twosome creating chaos wherever they went all throughout Hawkins. Their teachers had to admit they were a little relieved - they thought it would mean less to worry about. They didn't account for the following arguments in the middle of class to a point the two had to be split up at all costs - different seating plans and sitting them at the other sides of a classroom didn't work, and it got to a point of changing classes so they wouldn't even bump into each other on their routes to class.

No one knew why they had their sudden fall out - not even Steve's new girlfriend, Nancy. Not even Anita's new best friend, Robin.

They would always answer the same questions with some bullshit of "things just don't work out sometimes", or that "some friendships aren't always forever".

Nobody knew they had fallen out so massively because Steve was annoyed that Anita would spend all of her time living up to her parent's expectations of perfect grades and a perfect future and perfect everything. Nobody knew that he was only trying to help because that night he admitted he had loved her more than anything. She might've said it back if it weren't for the comments about her parents. Some rumours say their argument got so bad Steve's father had to break the argument up and pull Anita outside.

Anita was stubborn. It was simple. She had nothing to apologise for, and so, she waited for him to apologise first. It broke both of them, really, because the stress of Anita's life was crushing her - and the only person who could help with that was her best friend, who she may or may not have fallen in love with when she was 14. All she wanted was to collapse into his arms and cry and tell him everything, but she was waiting for an apology that never came.

- And in November 1983, it all came crashing down. Will Byers, one of the kids she babysat as her part time job, disappeared, and nothing was ever the same again. Two ex best friends had to push aside their differences and team up to take down a monster from another world, and most importantly, save the kids they had apparently adopted along the way.
