"cmon" i said to finney. he only sighed. he had basically given up all hope.he finally got up and we walked over to the hallway. finney and i kneeled on the ground. i saw a piece of the floorboard that was loose. i tugged on it and it came apart.
we continued to pull apart the pieces of the floor until we finally reached dirt.
we took our time digging down and down. we would put the dirt in the toilet and flush it down. after we had dug for about 30 mins we decided it was time to take a break.
we took a rug and put it over the hole as to not let the grabber see it.
we made our way over to the bed and flopped down on it and fell asleep.
"hello?" i asked. "hello?" again. i turned around and hung up the phone. nothing. i turned around again to face finney. i sighed
"billy was one of the victims. he said that he's waiting upstairs, and if you go, he'll beat you with a belt. and he won't stop". saying that made my stomach hurt.
finney walked towards the door and opened it. "what are you doing??" i whisper yelled. "hold on" he said motioning back to me. he slowly started walking up the steps. oh my he's gonna die.
"get down here!" i yelled. he was almost at the top. he stopped in his tracks. he turned around and slowly walked back down. i yanked his arm back in and shut the door behind him.
"you could've been beaten!" i said. "i would've risked it" was all he said. we both turned our attention to the eggs that were still on the ground.
"you can have it. i really don't want it." i said. i did want it. really bad. but i didn't wanna take it away from him. he'd been through more. "no, y/n we're sharing it. i'm not letting you starve." he said.
"i just don't want to take it from you, you deserve it more than me." i said. "we're sharing it" he said sternly. i only nodded.
we both sat down on the ground. he spilt the eggs into halfs and starting digging in. and by digging in i mean no silverware (although we didn't have any). straight hands.
although this seemed extremely nasty to me i had no other choice so i did the same. i started picking the eggs up with my hands. they did taste good, actually.
finney took a sip of the soda and offered it to me. i took a sip too.
this was probably our only meal for a long time.
ringing. the phone.
it was the only thing that ever woke us up anymore. i tried to move out was weighed down by something. i looked down and saw finney curled up in my chest.
"finney" i whispered. "hm?" he mumbled. "get up" i said. and he did. he slowly sat up and rubbed his head. i got up and picked up the phone.
"you said my name was billy"
"billy showalter"
"don't call me that. i don't remember it, it's not who i am now."
i watched as finney watched the soda bottle slowly shaking around on the ground.
"what do you want us to call you, then? what do you remember?"
the bottle suddenly hit the ground. "i told you. i was a paperboy."
"okay. paperboy." finney said. he had started listening in to the conversation while i wasn't looking.
"see the wall in front of you? see how the wall is separated from the floor?"
"yeah" i said as finney slowly walked towards the wall.
"i tore a long cable loose from down there. i kept it hidden."
"what are we supposed to do with that?"
immediately, the bottle started spinning around. finney jumped a little.
the bottle span faster and faster until...
it stopped and started pointing to the window we had tried to get out of earlier with the bed. we both looked up at it. all we did was nod at eachother.
finney started to tear the cord from inside of the wall while i stood where i was. i hung up the phone.
finney walked over with the cord and started trying to get it hooked onto the window. nothing.
i walked over and started trying to as well. but then i had an idea. "hold on" i said. i walked over to the hallway where we had taken one of the rugs before to cover up the hole.
"can you help me please?" i asked. "of course" finney said while walking to where i was.
"i think if we take one of these rugs, string the cord through we can somehow get a hold of the window" i said.
now that i'm saying it out loud it sounds crazy.
"what" was all finney said. "just help me" i said, irritated
we brought the rug over to the window (not with ease). us being two wimpy teenagers was not helping. we propped the rug up under the window.
"ok now feed the cord through sort of" i said. he nodded and took the cord. he started slowly feeding it through.
i saw the top of the cord come through. "okay now back up" i said. i took the cord from his hands and began feeding it around the window. the cord back down and i heard finney say "yes! you're a genius!"
"i know i am" i said while pulling the cord back down. "ok pull the rug away" i said. and he did. i grabbed a hold of the two cords now and started climbing.
"nevermind this is a horrible idea y/n!" i heard finney say. "it's.. gonna work" i said through grunts. nope. i fell almost immediately.
i felt hands come around my waist to grab me. "are you okay?" he asked. "yes, i'm fine" i said looking at him. "i think i need to make a knot. but i have no idea how. can you?" i asked. "i can try" he said.
he tried for about two minutes and eventually made a big enough knot to step on. "you're a lifesaver" i said and smiled at him. i debated kissing him at that very moment.
contain yourself.
i slowly began climbing up again. i finally reached the edge and grabbed a hold of the lock thing that was up there. i finally got it and pulled.
i fell back. "ahh!" i yelled. "i got you! i got you!" i heard finney say. he had his hands around my waist again. "but hey, you got it undone!" he said pointing to the grate in my hands.
screw this.
i kissed him. on his cheek. "thank you finn"
he blushed. i've never seen him do that. it was a good feeling though.
