No More, No More

I pulled up the gravel driveway to the Tallarico residence. Sitting on the front porch was Steven's mom and dad. I parked and we both got out, hand in hand. When Steven's mom saw him, her eyes lit up, but she came to me first.

"Janie! Honey! How are you?! It's good to see you again!" I hugged her and she kissed me on the cheek. This woman was adorable.

"Nice to see you, Mrs. Tallarico!" I gushed. She went to Steven next, like mothers do, and kissed his cheeks. I'm sure if anyone but me were here to see this, Steven would never have let her love on him like that. It was adorable. Steven was a regular Mama's boy.

"How are you honey? You look exhausted! Did you have a long flight?" She knew. She totally knew Steven had been coming down from his high all night.

"I'm fine mom. How are you?" asked Steven, rolling his eyes at her over-abundance of attention.

"Fine honey. Why don't you come sit? Have some iced tea! I just brewed it!" she was so happy to see us. She handed me a glass of tea and we sat down on the porch.

"So, what have you two been up to since we spoke last? Anything exciting?" she prodded.

"Not really. Just being on tour and stuff. You know the album is finished. It's doing really well." said Steven.

"Really? That's great sweety. Did you say you have a show coming up somewhere around here soon?" she asked.

"Yeah in Boston. On the 18th. Why." Steven looked nervous.

"Well we would love to come see you perform. We could sit with Janie while you're preparing for the show. We'll stay out of your way. You would never know we were there." Steven's face turned as white as a ghost.

"Actually, Janie's sister is coming to the show. So she has to show her around. We have another date in a month or so. How about you can come to that one?" he tried convincing her.

This was a good enough reason for Mrs. Tallarico. "Okay honey. I didn't know you were expecting company already! I'm sorry!" she said. "Next month sounds fine."

It would have been no problem for me to show Steven's parents and my sister around, but I knew there was a good reason for why Steven didn't want his parents there, so I kept my mouth shut.

"Mrs. Tallarico, these chairs are beautiful. Where did you get them?" I asked her, changing the subject. I really did like the chairs. They were a deep cherry wood rocking chair.

"Oh honey, please call me Susan. Mrs. Tallarico was my mother." she smiled. "We got these from the wood carver right up the street. I'll go and see if I can find the number for you." She got up and went to look for the number.

Steven's dad was sitting at the piano, playing some classic music I had never heard, but Steven was awe-struck. I knew he learned to play from his dad, and his dad was a huge inspiration to a lot of the songs he wrote. I didn't want to interrupt them with my unnecessary chit chat, so I excused myself.

"I'll be write back, I have to use the restroom." I said. I walked inside the house and found Steven's mom, who was in the living room paging through a phone book.

"What do you need honey?" she asked me.

"Can you show me where your bathroom is?" I asked her.

"Of course, down the hall, first door on your right sweetheart. I'm just trying to find that number for you." she said.

I took my time using the bathroom, and when I came out, Mrs. Tallarico was sitting in the living room thumbing through an old photo album.

"Janie, you have to come see these pictures of Steven. Wasn't he just adorable?" she beamed.
