Wendy had decided to trust (M/N) wholeheartedly. He knew that because as soon as they stopped talking, she snuggled up against him and fell asleep. He had no misgivings about her either. If she had wanted him dead, all she would've had to do was disappear from that tree without pointing out the tracker-jacker nest.
However, there was still a thought needling (M/N) in the back of the mind, an obvious thought that had been sitting there since he first met up with Wendy. Both of them couldn't win the Games. But since the odds were still against both of them surviving, he managed to bury the thought again.
It wasn't too hard, since he was distracted by his most recent idea involving the Careers and their supplies. Somehow (M/N) and Wendy had to find a way to destroy their food. He was pretty sure feeding themselves would be a tremendous struggle. Traditionally, the Career tributes' strategy was to get hold of all the food early on and work from there. The years when they didn't protect it well - specifically one year a few years ago, a pack of hideous reptiles destroyed it. In another a Gamemakers flood washed it away - those were usually the years that tributes from other districts won. The Careers had always been better fed growing up, and that was their disadvantage. Because they didn't know how to be hungry. Not the way (M/N) and Wendy did.
He was too exhausted to formulate a detailed plan that night. His wounds were still healing, and his mind was still a little foggy from the venom. The warmth of Wendy at his side, her head cradled on his shoulder, gave him a sense of security.
(M/N) realised for the first time just how lonely he'd been in the arena. How comforting the presence of another human could be. He gave into his drowsiness. Tomorrow, it was the Careers who would need to watch their backs.

The boom of a cannon jolted (M/N) awake. The sky was streaked with light, the birds already singing. Wendy was perched in a branch across from him, listening for more shots, but there weren't any.
"Who do you think that was?" (M/N) couldn't help thinking of Katsuki.
"I don't know. It could have been any of the others," Wendy said. "I guess we'll know tonight.
"Who's left again?" (M/N) asked.
"Both tributes from District 1, The boy from 3, the boy from 4, Shoji and me, and you and Katsuki," she said. "That's eight. Wait, and the girl from 10, the one with the bad leg. She makes nine."
There was someone else, but neither of them could remember who it was.
"I wonder how that last one died," Wendy said.
(M/N) shrugged. "No telling. But it's good for us. A death should hold the crowd for a bit. Maybe we'll have time to do something before the Gamemakers decide things have been moving too slowly," he looked down at her hands. "What's in your hands?"
"Breakfast," Wendy responded. She held them out, revealing two large eggs.
"What kind are those?"
"Not sure. There's a marshy area over that way. Some kind of waterbird."
It would have been nice to cook the eggs, but neither of them wanted to risk a fire. (M/N) guessed that the tribute who died just before was a victim of the Careers, which meant they'd recovered enough to be back in the games. The two sucked out the insides of each egg, ate a rabbit leg, and some berries. It was a good breakfast anywhere.
"Ready to do it?" (M/N) said, pulling on his pack.
"Do what?" Wendy asked. But by the way she bounced up, (M/N) could tell she was up for whatever he proposed.
