Bondage and Shibari

This is where bondage comes into play. People engaging in bondage like to restrain or be restrained by ropes and/or other attributes such as handcuffs, chains or spreader bars. The rigger is the one which likes to tie up their partner(s). Rope bunny is the general term for someone who enjoys getting restrained, even if it's not with ropes.

Restraining with ropes doesn't necessarily have to happen in a sexual context. "Shibari", a Japanese knot tying method, has gained popularity over the last few years. It doesn't aim to be used in sexual activities (although it can lead up to it). More so it can be seen as a form of art. In Shibari, the rope bunny is being "decorated" with ropes. Shibari can also be used as a deep pressure method to help with anxiety and panic disorders. There are also plenty of self-tying methods so a partner isn't always needed (which is quite handy if Shibari is used for deep pressure in case of an anxiety attack or similar situations).
