(aged up AU in which Kiara is a teacher and JJ is still, well, JJ. Criminal JJ. Pre-relationship.)
Finally, Kiara could leave the classroom. She dragged her hands down her face as she traversed the corridor. She was so done with school, she'd already been there as a teenager!
Someone remind her why she was a teacher again? And someone did.
On the way to the staffroom for a much needed coffee, he appeared. He rounded the corner, visiting staff lanyard around his neck. Kiara's mouth went dry.
JJ was visiting to give a lecture to the year elevens about health and safety when practising self defence. Did he want to? No. But Kiara had been the one to tell him he shouldn't go as he was the last person to talk about health and safety.
So naturally, he did a full 360° and after that, and nothing could convince him not to take the job.
So there he was, walking around Outer Banks High School pretending he didn't even know her. He didn't even look at her as he walked towards her. But she looked at him. Oh, she looked at him.
And he did not look how he normally did. Oh, no, he did not.
He'd pulled out his old glasses for the occasion, the slender black frames sitting pretty under his blonde hair. Her lips parted as he walked past, white dress shirt rolled up to his elbows, lanyard around his neck, sitting on his chest where her hands should be. She scanned him.
Still wearing his boots, though. She smiled, eyes coming back to his face as he passed her. Still, he didn't give her so much as a look. She turned, eyes fixed on him until he rounded the corner out of sight.
He was messing with her.
And it was working. After she'd poured herself another coffee and returned to the classroom, Kiara spent the next two hours desperately trying to push him out of her mind and teach the class about the Hiroshima bombing in the Cold War, and maybe promoting saving the turtles too. But every single time she so much as paused, he was there sitting smugly in her head.
He's doing this on purpose, that little—
The second the bell rang for lunch, she was out almost as fast as the kids. The only thing was, she didn't have the faintest idea where he was. He could be anywhere in the building, even teaching a class. She still didn't think he could teach health and safety. Fighting, yes. Safety while fighting? Less so. But hey, he was here to prove her wrong, much to her dismay. Or perhaps not. It depended where he was and how much time they had because gosh she could not take it anymore.
That was about when she went into the closet to get Anya a new history book.
What she was not ready for was to walk around the middle shelf and see another person. He leant against the wall, eyelashes glancing across his glasses ever so slightly. He snapped the book in his hand shut and, barely, looked up at her through those very eyelashes.
"Took you long enough." JJ said.
Yeah, breath? Gone. She had none of that left, he'd taken it all.She took her time. She scanned every last curve and ridge in his stupidly toned body from his long, capable legs to the tiny scars she'd seen countless times on his lips. The thing was, how did they feel?
She wanted to know. She wanted to know now.Gently, he pushed himself off the wall. With steps tantalisingly slow but satisfyingly hasty, he brushed past her, scanning her as he did, and nudged the door closed with his fingertips. It clicked shut. And with that click, her mouth went dry once more. She licked her lips, looking down at him behind her.
"Well? Did they approve of your teaching?" She asked, aware he was right behind her. Right there behind her. His breath coasted the skin by her ear, his hand easing itself under hers. The silence felt sickeningly long, settling in the tiny space between them until he broke it.
"Tell me you want me." He whispered, voice scratching every itch inside her. A shiver shot through her, nerves lighting as every hair stood on end. She turned her head slightly, glancing at his hand on her crutch."You," her voice was breathy, much more so than she realised, "full well know the answer to that question."
Something flicked a switch in her when she caught his breath hitch, his steady breathing on her neck disrupted, just for a moment."Tell me anyway." He murmured, his lips grazing the dangerous spot just below her ear lobe. She shuddered, allowing his fingers to twist between hers. Her head protested, but once she turned, he guided her hand to his side and her heart was already involved. It had been for a long time.
Now that she could see him, it wasn't helping. Because now she could see the way he looked at her through lidded eyes, glasses a welcome new addition. She would be sad to see them go. Underneath the stray strands of wavy brown hair that'd drifted over his eyebrows, they made him look exactly like the type of coworker who'd cause...issues.
She watched him, his breath shaky and filled with anticipated wanting. Kiara bit her lip, glancing at him as best she could when his body was pressed flush to hers.
It was the hand that twirled up and around her arm that made her sigh. It was the way their lips danced centimetres apart, swaying this way and that, brushing over each other that sent her bones bursting into flames of longing.
Since forever, it'd been an unwritten law between them to stay away from each other. It wasn't allowed. It was too complicated. They weren't made for each other. And here? If someone found them...
"You," her breath was shaky, "have been playing with me all day."
She could look nowhere but the lips that she couldn't seem to meet. So close, yet so unbearably far. He swayed slightly, practically whispering into her mouth, a smirk dancing across his own.
"You have been playing with me for months. It's only fair I return the favour." His lips shuddered forward, brushing hers with tantalising gentleness.
"It's only fair..." He murmured, his hand drifting to her hair, tucking it behind her ear. "It's only fair I..."Her heart ached. They shouldn't. They couldn't.
"It's only fair I return the favour." He said. What little space that was left between them was gone in an instant. That was when Kiara discovered just how close they could really get. Her heart lept as their lips pushed together, as one, pushing and pulling in a game neither was winning nor losing. Just, together. Then he pressed harder. She grabbed for his back, shirt rippling under her fingertips as his hands gripped her thighs, lifting her off the ground. The action caused searing cold air to rocket through the gap it created. She had to be closer.
She shoved her hips back towards his, desperate for the friction it caused. He let out a low, throaty rumble as her hands skimmed behind his ears and through his hair, tugging gently. Next thing she knew, her back slammed into the wall, books clattering to the ground. She grunted but there was no letting up. She pushed her lips further. It became messy as it became more despairing, his lips drifting to the corners of her mouth as he muttered a breathless "sorry". Any pain his shoving her to the wall had caused immediately melted as his hands gripped her tighter. His lips left burning patches wherever he went. Over her jaw, by her ears, down her neck. The trail seared into her skin but left her mouth yearning. Roughly, she tugged on his hair, bringing his lips back to hers.
Her voice felt raw as she spoke into him, "JJ, I—"
"You're amazing." He whispered into her. Her insides shivered, his fingers dragging across her legs, just slightly.
"JJ—"The light was not welcome. Not at all. With a click, the door swung open. Kiara's eyes sprung apart, lips darting away from his. JJ whipped his head around, fury swirling in his eyes, to see who had walked in.
"Uh..." The blonde woman stared, wide eyed and gaping. Kiara went bright red. JJ, however, shot him the most unnerving glare she'd ever seen.
"Get. Out." JJ growled.
It was at least six seconds before Sarah shook herself and slammed the door shut.Darkness overtook the closet once more. Heart thrashing in her chest for more than one reason, Kiara looked down at him as he turned back around, hands showing no sign of letting her feet return to the floor. She watched him gaze at her, lips parted and panting. Hair a shameless mess, shirt creased and half open, glasses steamed slightly.
He licked his lips, hands shifting under her.
"You okay?" He asked.
She rolled her eyes and grabbed his shirt, yanking his mouth back to hers.
