"Come on!" Kiara pulled on his shirt, edging towards the door. JJ's house, or rather John B's, was as dark and dingy as usual, as draughty and quiet as usual. Or it would've been if it weren't for the rain pounding on the roof."No!" JJ protested, tugging back on his vest, fighting her. She rolled her eyes, the door barely a metre away.
"But babe," she said, looking desperately towards it. She wanted to get out into the cold, refreshing rain more than anything. He pulled a face, "But babe!" He mocked her. Kiara groaned, exasperated. But neither of them would stop smiling anytime soon.
She decided to try a different route.
Letting him go, she spoke, "Please."
He smoothed his vest, satisfied, before looking back at her from under his blonde hair.
"Nah," he said, waving her away, "Rain sucks."
She batted his arm over his back, "That's just because you're born in fire, dumbass. Gunfire, to be specific. Anyone would think you're married to your gun."
"So?" He shot back, "Smart-smartass."
She merely laughed. She knew why he didn't like the rain—he didn't like how it put out fires he worked so hard to light. This time, her fingers brushed his bare arms as she looked up at him.
"Please." She said. When he didn't budge, she shrugged.
"Okay fine." She reached for the handle, "Guess I'm going out by myself."
"What?"She couldn't see his face as she opened his creaky wooden door, but she could imagine the retriever-like confusion in those eyes that could contain so much fire. It amused her. The rain poured from the top of the door, cascading down onto the muddy cobblestone outside. With a grin, she stepped out in her shorts and hoodie. His hoodie, mind you.
"Hey!" He called after her. She waved him away, snorting when she heard a thud where he banged his head on the door's top.
There'll be a dent there before long. She thought. The rain was as amazing as she'd imagined. It thudded onto the pavement with such gentle force, it reminded her of him. As she spread her arms, letting the sky fall onto her body, soaking everything from her hair to her trainers, she heard him call.
"Hey! That's my hoodie!" He said, "You're getting it wet!"
In one movement, she spun and stuck her tongue out at him, "Come and get it then!"
Then she flicked her ass.
"Hey!" He yelled, putting on fake offence. "Nah! Only I touch that!"
She laughed and kicked rain in his direction. She watched him chew his cheek, shaking his head with a disbelieving smile. He shook his fingers at her, "You," he said.
"Me?" She pointed at herself, widening her eyes as innocently as she could. He nodded, rubbing his lower back and pacing slightly in the doorway.
"You," he said, "Are going to get it."Before she could fire another taunt his way, his arms were wrapped around her, her feet lifted from the ground. Kiara yelped.
"Hey hey hey!" She squealed, swatting at his arms, "Not fair!"He spun her around, the rain splattering off then in every direction, ricocheting off the ground with splashing droplets.
"I tell you what's not fair," he said. Her feet touched the ground for barely a moment before his fingers dug into her stomach, tickling until her throat turned raw from laughing and chest ached from pleading.
"Making me chase you into Hurricane Ashley!" He exclaimed, blowing into the curve of her neck. She yelped again.
"No!" She protested through laughter, trying in vain to wriggle free, "Stop!"
"Never!" He announced, picking her up once more. When her feet landed back on solid ground, the rain puddled around their feet, his fingers no longer assaulted her ticklish spots. Instead, he stood behind her, leaning over her head. His soaked hair dangled under his upside-down head, the grin she looked up at giving her one of her own.
"Meep." He said, pressing a quick, water-soaked kiss to her slippy forehead. Kiara laughed, relishing in the rare sight of a drenched JJ. But before she could speak, rub it in his face that she got him out there, a voice made him snap his head up.
"Yeah I know!" A man. JJ grabbed her hand, dragging her away from the middle of the dark road.
"Well if you know why are we out here?" A woman.
"Because she isn't picking up and I need her to prove to you that what you did isn't a legitimate way to win Monopoly!"
JJ snorted a laugh as she pulled her into the slim space between the tree and the wall. Pressed between the ransacked wall and his chest, she knew exactly who the pair were. John B and Sarah. They were hiding simply because no one was meant to know about their relationship. "No pogue on pogue macking", or something like that.
"Well it's not my fault you don't know your capitalism from your game domination." Sarah said, her cane clinking in the flooded road. She couldn't see the pair, but she sure could hear them. And they were close. She looked up at JJ, his hair clinging to his face as he peered out into the road, evidently having a much better view than her.
"Yeah well," she spotted John B across the road as drenched as them, "Well! You're a history teacher so."Then she watched Sarah trailing behind him holding an umbrella.
"So?" She spluttered, amused.
"So, so shut up!" John B said.JJ snorted. Kiara shook her head as best she could. She'd seen those two, dysfunctional and bizarre as they were.
"Not gonna happen!" Her voice rung out proudly behind him.
"Well Pope'll shut you up when he agrees with me."
"Yeah, we'll see." Sarah did not sound worried in the slightest.Slowly, their voices drifted away until they were barely a hum inside John B's cabin. And then, nothing.
Kiara could hear nothing but the pattering of rain on roofs and bins, collecting on every surface. That and her breathing. And JJ's. She felt the low rumble in his chest as he laughed, looking down at her again.
"They are the biggest dorks ever." He said. She looked up at him.
"Tell me about it." She said, "To argue over Monopoly and come out in a literal storm just to prove who's right," she waved away dismissively, joking, "is a total turn off."
He pouted as he nodded, "Oh yes, definitely."Time seemed to slow as he reached for his hair, running his hands through the drenched mess and ruffling it until rain showered in every direction, sparkling droplets hanging off the damp ends. She wouldn't have known she was staring up at him, lips parted, if he hadn't looked down at her and smirked.
"Assuming that's not a total turn off, then, huh?" He said, tilting his head slightly. She averted her eyes, finding her fingernails excessively interesting.
"Hmm, maybe a little bit turned on, not much." She said."No?" His fingers gently drummed on her shoulders as he leant back on the wall, hands drifting up to her jaw.
"Nope." Her voice was falsely high. She dropped her hands, looking anywhere but him. "Not a bit.""What about," his voice turned low and breathy as his fingers curled up through her waterlogged hair, scratching slightly at her. "If I do that."
She shivered, still refusing to give him any eye contact.
"Nah, not for me." She point blank lied. He scoffed slightly, massaging her scalp until her eyes flicked closed with a satisfied sigh. The second they did, her breath was taken away as he pressed his lips to hers.Rain flowed across their lips as they struck fire into the storm. His mouth burned into hers as she moved to fit into his rythmic sways. Slowly, she wrapped her arms around his shoulders as he pulled her jaw to him, desperate to drink every last part of her. Determined to keep the rain out of what was his. Glad of it, she pulled him closer, wrapping her legs around his waist as his hands drifted down to her thighs. She gasped as he flicked her ass.
"Told you." He murmured. She felt his smirk on hers, so she bit down onto his lip with a smirk of her own.
"Hey!" He said, digging his fingers into her legs until she gasped again.
"Ah screw you." She said, grabbing the sides of his face and pulling him closer. She immediately realised her mistake, never learning her lesson from the countless times she'd said the exact same thing. He kissed her harder.
"When and where, cupcake?" He muttered.
