"shit"
REAL LIFE
THE BELL RANG throughout the Woods household. Twice, actually, because Jenna had her earphones on full volume. Which is fun when you're listening to Mac deMarco, but not when someone suddenly calls you and the ringtone basically tears your eardrums.
The screen flashed an all too familiar name. She picked up the call, putting it to her ear automatically even though the sound went through her earphones.
"Hi Finn, What's up?" "Are you home?" He spoke. "Yeah im just in my room, why?" "Because im outside dumbass. Why the hell didn't you open the door?"
The girl got up out of her bed and started walking to the front door. "I didn't hear the bell." She shrugged. "I rang twice." "I was listening to music!" Her defensive tone made him laugh.
"Hi." They we're standing in front of each other. Just standing. Staring. They probably shouldn't be staring. "Hi." He clicked a button on his phone and Jenna heard the call disconnect.
"So what were you here for?" "Nothing particular, really. Just to talk. About, you know, life." She attempted to hold in her laughter at his serious face and choice of words.
"Don't laugh at me." "Im sorry you're just acting so.. serious?" He sighed, smiling himself.
"Wow i've been here for a minute and you're already laughing at me." "One of my many talents."
A comfortable silence fell over them.
"What were you listening to?" "Mac deMarco." He leaned closer to the girl and both their hearts were beating faster, but it was much less visible on Finn's face. The perks of being an actor.
He grabbed one of her earphones and places it in his ear, pressing play on her phone. He was still close. Very close.
The song was playing, but neither of them were listening. Either focused on their racing heart or on the person standing in front of them.
"Hey Je-" He was cut of with Jenna's lips touching his. She gave in. Just as she pulled away slightly, he realised what was happening. Placing a hand on her face he pulled her close again.
It was a weird feeling. As if fireworks were exploding within his stomach and were threatening to burst out. He understood the butterfly metaphor now. He couldn't help but smile into the kiss as she rested her hand in his hair.
Kissing Finn was like letting out a breath Jenna didn't know she had been holding in for her entire life. She hadn't ever known a feeling even slightly like this. She could've stayed there forever.
She could've if realisation didn't hit her like a brick. She was kissing someone who kissed another girl just a few nights ago. This wasn't going to work. No matter what she did now it was only going to make things worse.
So she pulled away. Eyes full of regret. His heart broke a little at the sight of them. "I'm sorry, i shouldn't have-" She hadn't even finished her sentence before turning around and closing the door behind her. Locking him out.
Her tears immediately fell. "Shit." She muttered. That was it. That was the moment that would ruin their friendship. She fucked up. Why the hell would he kiss her back?
She heard footsteps. Not coming closer. Fading away.
He left. Of course he did. He wouldn't be the exception, as much as she hoped. She gets attached, he leaves, that's how it works apparently.
She sat there for a moment. Letting everything sink in that happened in the past few months sink in, Jenna never thought she was the one for a dramatic heartbreak, but she just hadn't met the right person. And boy did that person break her heart.
Carefully she got up, walking back into her room. A t-shirt laid on her chair. She grabbed it slowly, taking off her hoodie and switching it out for the shirt.
The smell of him had mostly faded, yet as she laid in her bed, hugging the covers, she could still imagine the feeling of her head on his chest and them breathing in sync.
She would love to say she fell asleep shortly after, but it was a long night of crying and overthinking. It got to the point where she had to change her pillowcase because it had been soaked in her tears.
At around 4:00 the tears seemed to have stopped coming. She was left with a throbbing headache and burning eyes, but she was so tired that despite it all she could still fall asleep.
The boy across town wasn't so lucky. He was still wide awake, debating whether or not to go back and tell her that he wasn't sorry, and that she was everything he wanted.
That his smile grew just a bit wider at the sight of her, his eyes just a bit brighter every time she laughed. His heart begging to break out of his chest every time she made a stupid flirty comment, that he thought meant nothing to her.
He knew however, that in the long run it would only break her heart more. So he didn't. Instead he pressed play on the playlist they made together for the third time that night.
"Staying away is better than breaking her heart." That was the main thought in his head that night. While hers was the exact opposite.
